Rode this climb at the end of May. I started early as the wind picks up during the day and had read that its fairly open at the top. The first part is pretty easy as the gradient chart suggests, but then gets quite tough as you pass through the villages after Lastours,
Riding up through the trees with the gorge opening out to the left felt secluded and sheltered. It was really quiet, with only a few cars coming downhill from the villages, and once past Roquefere I didn't see anyone else for the rest of the way up!
Once you get out of the treeline into the last 3k the wind hits you and when its on your face makes the gradient seem much steeper. Thankfully as the road changes direction you get the boost of a tailwind and the views at the top stretch out to the Pyrenees. It was very windy at the top and 10 degrees cooler so a jacket or gilet is a must for the descent.
From Carcassonne, 80km round trip with the difficult climb through Lastours: I had to manage the effort, stop to eat and drink... but I have only been cycling for a year (and I have to drag my 90 kilos!)!
The descent through Cabrespine is a real pleasure after this climb! You just have to be careful not to get caught up in some of the bends...
Finally, half a day with a picnic in front of the antenna (especially in front of the Pyrenees!) with 3 hours of cycling and almost 1250 D+ at the end of a year of cycling on the WE, I felt a certain pride!
A great classic for lovers of the passes and summits of the region.
The landscapes are varied and interesting.
The quality of the surface varies greatly depending on the sector: from good to very poor.
Beware of the wind as soon as you leave the Roquefère valley and reach the Pradelles-Cabardès plateau.
There is very little traffic on the route, both motorists and cyclists.
