Made with a touring bike, a little heavy but fortunately triple plateau, this pass was the last in the region that I missed . It's not the most difficult climb but I found it interminable n ́ayant pas de longue ascension cette année. I had no time objective, only to ́ get there. I did. Excellent surface, very little traffic, no cyclists crossed, only motorcyclists.... read more

I did.

Beautiful but tough climb. In the beginning, the percentages go up immediately and it is difficult to get into your rhythm. So don't start too fast!
Once you're out of the forest, you can see the top and then it's a little raking before you can enjoy the view!

I got to know this climb through a German colleague during my participation in Otztaler Radmarthon. We stayed toon just across the border in Steinach where the start and finish of this Granfondo was always in the 90s. It was a very nice experience and I have even been back several times already to spend a weekend climbing in the High Mountains. This in combination with the Jaufenpass the day after . Also in late autumn in the Indian Summer this climb is very.beautiful .

For me the first serious mountain I ever cycled up. We were in an apartment in Egg/local Dosso (Erler), so this climb was a must. The first 2 km can hardly be called a warm-up, but as soon as you pass Elzenbaum, you are immediately faced with 2 km at 12% average. After this, the steepness slowly decreases to 7-8% . A few km below the summit, however, you enter open landscape where the cool wind has free play, and it also gets a bit steeper here.
On top of the summit you can enjoy the view!

During my climb, I have only seen a handful of cars and other cyclists. It is sometimes frightening to see motorcyclists that can pass you at high speed. (Especially if they come in the opposite direction and take the turn on your side of the road!)

The road surface was in pretty good condition during my climb.

In my opinion, this tough climb would not be out of place in the Giro!

Vipiteno/Sterzing was the central point of my cycling & hiking holiday and then climbing the Penser Joch/Passo di Pennes is one of the many cycling possibilities.
This lesser known mountain pass is the shortest connection between Vipiteno and Bolzano, but all car/freight/motorcycle traffic takes the long way via the faster highways in the valley, which of course makes for pleasant cycling amidst hardly any tourist traffic.
After a quiet run through the small industrial area the route climbs very steeply via gentle curves between split rocks and along a beautiful waterfall up the valley flank, so that the Isarco/Eisack river and the Brenner motorway sink in deeper below us. Afterwards you turn right away from the broad valley through pine forests with long gentle curves and sporadic hairpin turns.
Alpine hut Alpenrose, lonely on the beautiful panoramic pass height, is already in sight from afar but you still have to push firmly on the pedals (+-10%) to get there.
There are no signs for cyclists but the climb starts around km 65 and the top is km 50 so you can estimate your progress.

Heaviest climb you can do from Sterzing/Vipiteno but absolutely worth it!
