Sept. 2023 - it is a real exercise of pedaling technique, balance etc. because of loose gravel, stones & holes of any size - all on gradient 12+%. There are some transverse breaches forcing to carry the bike. There are also sections of reasonable and good tarmac, final kilometer or two are very good! Overall is it possible on road bike, the road conditions however, add some difficulty. Return is tough as one needs to keep the speed at 10-15 km/h on gradients above 12-14%. It is a really beautiful climb and the views are stunning. However, the road is slightly potholed in places and can be annoying on the steep sections

Return is tough as one needs to keep the speed at 10-15 km/h on gradients above 12-14%. In my case even this did not save me from puncture; millions of sharp stones and 25/700 tire. All this in last 10km, otherwise like other reviews.

The surface is bad, but it is possible to ride a road bike. Watch out for fairly large holes when going downhill. And now , only weekends 😉

A wonderful ascent without any contact with people, the beautiful landscape gradates with the meters of ascent. The road is narrow and in places of poor quality, be careful when going downhill, but cool.

Driving in August 2020; once you have turned off from Innerfragant in the direction of Oscheniksee, then it quickly becomes quiet and calm. I met another cyclist on my ascent and that should also be rather rare. Whoever wants to conquer this "Carinthian monster" should hurry up here, though: the condition of the ascent becomes increasingly catastrophic.
Besides the landscape (you drive into a rocky and natural landscape that is usually reserved for hikers), a special gimmick is the marking of the hairpin bends by very small signs beautifully inserted into the rocks. The reservoir itself is then quite unpretentious and would be in itself rather not worth an ascent. Be careful on the descent; you should note breakfast board sized holes in the road surface as you go up. I myself have not felt the ascent as hard as expected from descriptions; the Lammersdorfer hut lying in the extended neighborhood seemed to me much more torturous...

This 'Zoncolan of Austria' is located in no man's land. The difficulty is hardly expressible, even the profile says little or nothing here. The climb to the dam is actually prohibited for traffic, so you drag yourself to the top in peace and quiet, while the hairpin bends follow each other at high speed on a poor road surface. There is no moment of recuperation. It's a hard job to get to the top, but once you're out of the forest, you can fully enjoy the phenomenal views. At the top you'll be rewarded with a beautiful picture of the lake and the 360 degree panorama. In short, an animal of a climb, but a pure adrenaline rush once you reach the top!
