A legendary northern climb, the route of the 4 days of Dunkerque and a French championship.

A must if you're near Cassel. It's the most demanding. The start of the climb isn't great, but the finish is very strong. The finish through this superb gateway is unique.
In short, my favourite "sides" of the climb to Cassel:
1. Via Porte d'Aire
2. From Zermezeele (cobbles)
3. Via Petit Chemin de la Gare
4. From rue Albert Mahieu (100% cobbles)

The surface is deteriorating more and more, so much so that I got a puncture on the last steepest section of the wall and fell heavily. Nothing serious, but a powerful SUV swerved to avoid me! It was a nightmare!

The hardest climb in Cassel. The road is in poor condition for much of the climb. If it's your first time up it, don't underestimate it and keep your reserves, because from the last 200 metres onwards, a wall looms in front of you.

This slope is a good example of a slope where the devil is in the tail. The first 800 m are easy to do. But the closer you get to the Ariënpoort the steeper it gets. Once you've passed through the old gate it's a close call to the picturesque center of Cassel. Be careful when descending on the cobblestones.
In short, a nice, not too long slope. Only flaw is the road surface where in some places the top layer of the asphalt crumbles away.

Fantastic climb you would expect in the Ardennes rather than in the polders. One mistake. It is not located in Belgium but in France (French Flanders).
