Started this climb from Flattach, just before Ausserfragant. The climb starts off scorching right away and immediately fills up your legs. This is followed by a bit of a descent and heads towards the Mölltaler Gletscherbahn. From the barrier, things really take off and the road surface deteriorates dramatically. This, of course, only makes the climb harder. The trick is to still try to enjoy the fabulous scenery. The higher you get, the more beautiful, especially when the galleries loom. Look back regularly too, as you get a great view of the road travelled. The final kilometres fortunately ease off a bit and once past the ski station, the last few metres are incredibly enjoyable. The panorama at the summit with the dam and the lake is insanely beautiful! It quickly makes you forget the suffering on the way!

The surface is bad, but it is possible to ride a road bike. Watch out for drainage grooves and fairly large holes when going downhill.

I have done the climb on foot, so I can't tell you anything about the severity and the condition of the road surface for cyclists. In general, the latter seems to be fine.
It is an incredibly beautiful climb in terms of scenery and views, especially after the valley station of the Glacier Express. Very little traffic (actually none, except 'other' cyclists). Dress well though, because it can be chilly on top of the mountain.
