What a drama...in terms of road surface! Especially after the barrier..drainage holes..gravel..cracks and holes. Especially in the descent it's a massacre for your material because it's 10%+. Furthermore, the views are fantastic and you only encounter some hikers and workmen. This is not a climb you do for fun... it is a beast! I ride 34x34 and found it very hard....... read more

It is a breathtakingly beautiful and also tough climb! Beautiful reservoirs along the way, very quiet, Starting in forest areas and ending spectacularly above the tree line and first snow strips.

Road surface is very moderate and I went to visit the glacier after the climb and then went down on the mountain train with bike and all. This is to avoid a drain on your equipment and arms.

Very heavy. Climb started in ausserfragant. Immediately starts with a good 2 km of continuous 14%, 15% and 16%. Then a short descent but that's never good because that means it gets steep again. So I started riding slowly to prepare for something steep again.....
From the barrier I wanted to stop but tried anyway to see how bad the road was. It was really bad but for climbing I thought it was OK. I called my turns super slow and wide to catch my breath because there was no rest anywhere.
Very soon came a tunnel. But pitch black. Without lights, I think you have to go on foot because you really see NIKS.
Then there's a second tunnel but it's shorter and you can't see anything.
see all the lights on the other side of the tunnel when entering.
Where you see the open tunnels in the photos , it goes back down very slightly. Actually it starts to get really nice from then on so you're already this far , why not try further then?
Once at the top I was super happy anyway. Because I did this with 36/28 gears. Way too heavy for this climb. I urgently need to buy myself another bike 😏😁

Heel zwaar. Klim aangevat in ausserfragant.

Started this climb from Flattach, just before Ausserfragant. The climb starts off scorching right away and immediately fills up your legs. This is followed by a bit of a descent and heads towards the Mölltaler Gletscherbahn. From the barrier, things really take off and the road surface deteriorates dramatically. This, of course, only makes the climb harder. The trick is to still try to enjoy the fabulous scenery. The higher you get, the more beautiful, especially when the galleries loom. Look back regularly too, as you get a great view of the road travelled. The final kilometres fortunately ease off a bit and once past the ski station, the last few metres are incredibly enjoyable. The panorama at the summit with the dam and the lake is insanely beautiful! It quickly makes you forget the suffering on the way!

The surface is bad, but it is possible to ride a road bike. Watch out for drainage grooves and fairly large holes when going downhill.

I have done the climb on foot, so I can't tell you anything about the severity and the condition of the road surface for cyclists. In general, the latter seems to be fine.
It is an incredibly beautiful climb in terms of scenery and views, especially after the valley station of the Glacier Express. Very little traffic (actually none, except 'other' cyclists). Dress well though, because it can be chilly on top of the mountain.
