Hard easy climb: extreme length. I needed 5+ hours to climb only, starting from Tejina via La Esperanza.
Before leaving, the front derailleur of my rental bike was not shifting to high gear. While fixing I thought: you don't need any 50 in Tenerife! And so it was.
While piercing a nice and shady pine forest with gentle slopes, I could see blue skies and the Ocean all around me, but I was riding in the clouds and freezing cold. Is this Sahara latitude or the Alps??
At 2.150mt I was hoping for the Sun and an oxygen mask to drop on me. Cold headwinds came instead. Weather changed quickly (November) and I was glad I had a winter base layer to put on to descend.
I found the desired Sun and clear skies (I was higher than clouds!) In the final part.
Coming back: I descended to La Orotava and then followed the coast back home. I planned via Climbfinder and roads were Ok! Extra +650mt and excellent landscape added, no flat roads in Tenerife!
Be very careful where you plan roads, as people here are relaxed and used a relaxed approach following the maximum slope line with narrow and straight 25/30% roads (!) to go from A to B. Why bother with engineering and hairpins?
You will need good brakes if you descend there, I just had calipers but I luckily survived as crossing cars were so kind to stop and leave room for me to pass.
I hope any attempter will enjoy this climb as I did, as it's a unique place with volcano lunar landscape at the end, worth the effort. Winds can be strong in last 7 Km, unfortunately traffic is high but respecting cyclists, tarmac is excellent both sides.
Wonderful climb, though done from just off the main road near the airport. Then you skip the route right through the city. By the way, on the other side of town into the Anaga nature reserve is also highly recommended.
Back to this climb. The first kilometres from the airport go back and forth through a beautiful forest. I was there first week of January and the traffic wasn't too bad. As soon as you exit the forest, you get a beautiful view of the top of the volcano and, in the same view, the ocean. Bizarre and beautiful at the same time. The landscape gets more and more volcanic all the way to the summit.
Highly recommended.
Dikke aanrader.
