What a lot of hairpins! In beautiful surroundings, though. Beginning asphalt, later gravel. Italian side is fastest to get a cafe after the climb.

Wat een hoop haarspelden! Wel in een fraaie omgeving. Begin asfalt, later gravel.

A must!
This climb is unique, magical and majestic too.
The menu is comprehensive and incredibly varied. It's impossible to get bored for a minute!

First of all, the Mercantour and this Roya valley are absolutely splendid. The village of Tende is the most beautiful starting point you could dream of for a climb.

Let's start with the bends: it's called the 46 bends route, but in reality, from Tende to the summit, there are 65 bends. All types and sizes. From the tightest to the widest. Which makes for an absolutely crazy descent!

The surface: or rather the surfaces! This is a real showroom for the Ponts et Chaussées! They show us everything that exists. From the brand new black billiard table to the rocky, nasty road over the last 4 km.
This last section is really rough and difficult to get back down. Beware of punctures.
What's more, before reaching this stretch of road worthy of the Tour de France of the 1910s, we cross a whole section of hill that is under construction for another 4 km.
It's spectacular, and you can't help but imagine the climatic tragedy this Roya valley suffered in 2020.
The scars of Storm Alex are everywhere. In our hearts, in our flesh, in our geography.
The entire Roya Valley was and still is deeply scarred by the flooding and phenomenal devastation of 2 October 2020.
All the more reason to drive here and leave a bit of money to the shopkeepers and restaurateurs who have clung on to their battered land and are having a hard time of it.

We should also mention this alternating traffic! From Tende, you are only allowed to climb the mountain during even hours. For many kilometres, the road is so narrow that two vehicles cannot possibly pass each other.

Officially, climbing the pass is reserved for residents of communes very close to the pass, and requires authorisation from the Mairie.
Cyclists are not affected by this ban and can climb the pass as long as they respect the departure times.

This is a splendid pass. You can see everything:
military forts, bunkers, sheep, patous, shepherds, backhoes, abandoned houses, varied landscapes, fabulous switchbacks...

Sleeping on the pass is also a real reward.

5 stars! Without a shadow of a doubt.

Incontournable !

This was one of the most beautiful climbs I have ever done. The combination of paved and unpaved is amazing and the amount of hairpin turns is unprecedented.
Initially, I was worried that the col would be closed, but by bike you can do the climb just fine (June 2024). There is work on the road in the first few kilometres (up to the tunnel), but once you get past those km's it becomes unprecedentedly beautiful.
Because (on this site, among others) it says the Col is closed, there is hardly any traffic. All day I did not see a single other cyclist and only a handful of cars.
I did the climb on an MTB and I would definitely recommend that too. About half of the 57 hairpin bends are unpaved and once at the top you can go up a few more unpaved paths to see even more beautiful views.
At the summit, you will encounter several forts that you can enter (by bike).
This is a col you'll want to put (at the top) on your to-do list!
