Classic climb back to Italy after the various rounds in the Ubaye Valley. The sign forbidding the climb is there, but it is not enforced, and you pass quietly. The climb is regular without major inclines, the asphalt is good and the views are very beautiful. At the moment there are a few stretches regulated by traffic lights, but they are short stretches.

Climbed from Barcelonette at the bottom there is indeed a sign forbidding cycling, but I did it anyway, eventually after 2km you see where supposedly rocks can fall, but there are safety nets everywhere so I think this has already been fixed by now, eventually a very long run of 4-6% nowhere really difficult up to the top. Unfortunately, due to the many road works I had to pass 3 traffic lights up to the top :( , at the top there is a shop open from 10 am to 7 pm where you can buy soft drinks at very reasonable prices!

Beautiful views in a region with plenty of history - the road takes you past a Fort that was part of the Maginot line. The mountains, lake, streams and valleys are stunning.

riding 29/5/2024 from Les Gleizolles to lake Maddelena (on Italian side) and back: no police presence, no signage to not enter, only one sign to say there's video footage monitoring the rockfalls (about 2km stretch): no problem riding past as mentioned in other posts here. nice climb with marmottes at the top! little traffic on a Wednesday.

I did this climb as part of the classic 'round' Lombarda - Bonette - Larche. Although the climb in itself is not much, it felt heavy, partly due to the length, the headwind in the end and especially the previous climbs. The road surface is very good and the descent towards Italy is a pleasure.

The col de Larche... If you come from the Italian side, it is called the colle della Maddalena. In principle, you may not drive on this col unless you pass the part that is forbidden for cyclists. (Because of landslides and falling stones) At km 2.4 there is a piece of a few hundred meters that is indicated with prohibition signs and a traffic light. In principle because.... 1/ The police don't check for it. 2/ They themselves appear to have a number of cycling tourists in their ranks who also ride on it. (Dixit the hotel owner where we were staying) 3/ I was lucky enough to run into them on the way up and, after the descent there was a big check at the junction with the col de Vars. In neither case was I stopped. The col itself? Peace of cake, at least as far as the percentages are concerned. It never gets really tough unless combined with other climbs. The length can become a factor the higher you climb, though. Like many through roads to Italy, here too beautiful and wide asphalt. Given the heavy traffic that also drives on it is recommended to climb it during the WE. Especially during the vacations it is very quiet. The scenery is beautiful again, just like the whole Ubaye valley, which is sometimes called the Mecca of cycling in the Alps. At the top there is nothing to do except for a large parking lot and a shelter. You can hear the marmots whistling and if you are lucky like me you can also see them. (Look carefully in the middle of photo 4)

(goed kijken midden foto 4)
