A steep climb starting from Bouillon and going straight up along the Semois, leaving hardly any moments of rest. The first part is a constant climb with Bouillon slowly shrinking below you, while along the way you catch short views of the valley. At the top it flattens out briefly towards the forest edge and transmitter mast, but it remains punchy until the end.

Only after a holiday park does it level off somewhat, but then it still pulls on until it reaches a transmitter mast, by which time the greatest suffering is done. Best way to drive to France from Bouillon. The climb is certainly not the most scenic in terms of views as there are some buildings and at the end after the campsite there is no real open view anywhere. However, the fact that you first ride through Bouillon along the Semois makes up for a lot. By the way, if you do not pass through the small tunnel but come from the direction of the castle, you can already see the climb looming up nicely, which can make you lose courage. The climb is steep but never too steep. However, there are no rest stops until just before the end. There can be some traffic, especially on weekends.
Beste manier om vanuit Bouillon naar Frankrijk te rijden. De klim is qua uitzicht zeker niet het meest fraai omdat er wat bebouwing is en op het einde na de camping is er nergens echt een open zicht. Het feit dat je eerst door Bouillon langs de Semois rijdt maakt echter veel goed. Als je niet door het tunneltje komt maar uit de richting van het kasteel komt zie je de klim trouwens al mooi opdoemen waardoor de moed in de schoenen kan zakken. De klim is steil maar nooit te steil. Er zijn echter geen rustmomenten tot vlak voor het eind. Er kan wel wat verkeer zijn, vooral in het weekend.

I still remember heated discussions with comrades who were panting, firmly convinced that in the Tour de France this would be "at least"a col outside the category, and who saw any putting this into perspective as a personal insult to their efforts.
Years later, on a racing bike, it all goes a lot smoother, but it's still a tough one, and seeing Bouillon get smaller and smaller remains a special experience.

Mij herinnert de "Vieille Route" aan de vele scoutskampen in de vroege jaren 90 aan de Semois (Frahan, Dohan, Poupehan, ...) , waarbij we geregeld ook dit bergje over moesten (want "veiliger dan de drukke baan"), op een gewone stadsfiets (waar de meesten van ons hooguit drie versnellingen op hadden steken), soms met trekrugzak (als we op twee/driedaagse waren), en soms zelfs 's nachts (als we op de lappen waren geweest in Bouillon). Ik herinner me nog verhitte discussies met uithijgende kameraden, er stellig van overtuigd dat dit in de Tour de France "minstens" een col buiten categorie zou zijn, en elke relativering daarvan aanzagen als een persoonlijke belediging voor hun inspanningen.
Jaren later, met de racefiets, gaat het allemaal een stuk soepeler, maar het blijft toch een pittig ding, en het steeds kleiner zien worden van Bouillon blijft een bijzondere ervaring.

I have always had a soft spot for the town of Bouillon and the Semois valley. This climb that starts at the foot of the castle is quite difficult. You have to wait a good kilometre before you see the gradients decrease. In the middle of the climb, the houses become smaller and in theory there are fewer cars. In the first hectometres, the view is beautiful over the town and the castle of Bouillon. One of my favourite climbs in Belgium
J'ai toujours eu un faible pour la ville de Bouillon et la vallée de la Semois. Cette côte qui commence au pied du château est assez difficile. Il faut attendre un bon kilomètre avant de voir les pourcentages diminuer. Au milieu de la côte, les habitations diminuent, et on croise en théorie moins de voiture. Dans les premiers hectomètres, la vue est belle sur la ville et le château de Bouillon. Une de mes côtes préférées en Belgique
One of the standard climbs I do when I'm in the area. Always a test for yourself. Very steep and no respite until after about a kilometre a hundred. Then it flattens out a bit to get back to serious climbing until the transmitter mast, after which there is an easier part, followed by a final three hundred meters that again look for double percentages.
Een van de standaardklimmen die ik doe als ik in de buurt ben. Telkens een test voor jezelf. Erg steil en geen verpozing tot na ongeveer een kilometer honderd. Dan vlakt het wat af om opnieuw serieus te stijgen tot de zendmast, waarna er een makkelijker stuk komt, gevolgd door een laatste driehonderd meter die opnieuw de dubbele percentages opzoeken.

mooie rustige klim tot bovenaan in bos, daarna best richting Corbion, want eerste rechts om terug te keren is mooi maar is een MTB trail door het bos
Don't forget to look back every now and then for the view! Because in front of you is only a long steep road with 1 curve in it.
Vooral niet vergeten af en toe om te kijken voor het uitzicht! Want voor je ligt alleen maar een lange steile weg met 1 bocht erin.
Not the most beautiful of climbs, but it's nice to leave Belgium via this wall. It's a very straight road, so maybe not very encouraging because all you see in front of you is a slope. Just before the transmitter mast the road flattens out, but the last part is a bit steeper again. Bienvenue en France!
Niet de allermooiste klim, maar het heeft wel wat om via deze muur België uit te rijden. Het is een erg rechte weg, dus misschien niet erg bemoedigend omdat je voor je alleen maar een helling ziet. Iets voor de zendmast vlakt het af, maar het laatste stukje wordt toch weer iets steiler. Bienvenue en France!
