The Lecht from the Tomintoul side is one of those climbs that reminds you why you ride a bike. As the summit comes into view, the gradient bites hard and demands everything you’ve got left in your legs. It’s a proper test, but one that’s incredibly rewarding when you finally reach the top.

What makes this climb special isn’t just the challenge. It’s the feeling of being surrounded by the wild beauty of the Highlands, with little more than open skies, rolling hills and the road ahead.

I recently had the privilege of watching my wife conquer this climb without stopping, achieving a goal she’d set herself long before we reached the foot of the mountain. Seeing her determination and grit on those final steep ramps made reaching the summit even more memorable.

A tough climb, stunning scenery and a summit that feels genuinely earned. One of Scotland’s great cycling ascents.

It was my first introduction by bike to the Scottish slopes, but I loved it: the desolation of the landscape, the eternal sheep watching your exploits, the quiet in the early pre-dawn, etc. The profile doesn't seem that tricky, apart from that kink at the end, but don't underestimate it if there is wind (and wind there often is), because in the absence of trees you have no defence against it. Nevertheless, well digested, with a Brompton folding bike.

Not a very exciting climb, except for the last bit before the chairlifts (you can ski as early as 650m here). Very nice views, though. The climb is much steeper from the other side, but to get there I first had to cross the summit by this side. On the descent escorted by two RAF fighter jets. They went just a bit faster, by the way.
