Cycled up this north side of El Teide as part of a 154km and 3900hm route created by Demi Vollering and the FDJ team in 2025. It takes a long way past the town of La Orotava before it gets really nice. Ridden up to 1700m altitude in often dense fog but from 1700m I got above the cloud cover and it was a steel blue sky. The caldera of the Teide is immense and insanely beautiful !!!

From Orotova onwards, the climb is really enjoyable, before that it is mostly navigating between traffic and a bit tedious. On warm days down below and a clear Teide, arm warmers and an undershirt are enough. On cold rainy days, I would advise against going up (unless you have good clothes).
The road surface is very good, so the descent (again, to Orotova) is also very nice.

Heavy but immensely worth it, enjoy ;)

The most pleasant ascent of El Teide. Not because it's flatter, but because the climate in the north of the island is not much better. Less hot plus greener. Doesn't mean it's easy. It is, however, a four-hour climb. I recommend bringing something warm for the descent. I, riding down in August, entered a "cloud" of cold, wet cloud and got terribly cold. On the way there is a nice bar at about 700 metres with delicious bacadillos, and at the top there are a few places in El Portillo to buy things like water or coffee. The climb is long so I recommend filling up your bidons and maybe some gel or something to eat.

I liked this one a lot, definitely one of the more manageable sides of the Teide. You have a long ride through the forest, still burned from a fire not long ago. Very easy to keep a constant pace since the gradient barely changes, even getting flatter after the "El Portillo" bar.

As we say with us 't is a runner'....
But it will take you a while....
A bucket list climb? Definitely. But not such a spectacular climb now either. At the top, though, it's beautiful.
There is quite a bit of traffic on the road, but the 1.5m is usually well respected.
