We often go up the Dark Lane climb in the early stages of rides out of Tring, and at that point everyone has fresh legs, and people tend to attack the climb. We often go up the Dark Lane climb in the early stages of rides out of Tring, and at that point everyone has fresh legs, and people tend to attack the climb. But it's the kind of climb that lends itself to being attacked. You climb quite gently for a while but then the gradient kicks in and at that point you can't see how far it goes, as the climbing continues round the corner. But even people who know the climb will lay the watts down here, to get up without losing much speed. When you do go round the bend and see that the climb is continuing you realise you might have gone a bit too hard to this point. The reminder of the climb can be a real grind, trying to keep your hurting legs going.
So it's quite a tough little climb, if you're riding it at tempo, and needs to be treated with some respect.
As the name suggests, it can be quite dark up there due to the overhanging trees, and the road can be slow to dry when wet.
Speaking of wet, the road is usually wet to some extent because there seems to be a constant water leak, or more likely spring, emerging at the bend, that is barely noticeable in the summer, but can run all across the road in the winter. Ice is therefore a risk in the winter, and I avoid descending it in cold temperatures, but I must say I've never actually seen it iced over, so the villagers or council must be keeping it well gritted.
