An inferno :) I climbed in hot weather, around midday, with very little shade (a little more in the second half, but that's anecdotal) and suffered like I rarely do on a pass. The start isn't as steep, but once you're in the hard stuff, it's all the way to the end. The slopes are steep, the few areas to rest are short and immediately followed by 9-11% slopes. The arrival at the summit is a liberation (with a bar for refreshments).... read more

I made the ascent via Chapareillan this week in cool weather.
A regular cyclist in the north of France but not used to the mountains, I wanted to test myself on this side of the mountain after having already climbed it on the Chambéry side. This climb isn't as long, but it's much more difficult. You have to find your rhythm and that's not easy because the percentages are really high and irregular, with little or no respite and some real ramps, especially on the last 3km with 500m of really steep climbing. My aim was to complete the climb without interruption and I've already achieved that. There's a chalet at the finish where you can take a break and have something to eat before continuing into the Chartreuse massif, which offers other really nice routes for cycling enthusiasts. Be careful on the descent via Chapareillan, as there are some fairly sharp bends and you need to manage your speed.

Hard, uneven pass. Done at the very beginning of spring like this, it's fine but beware of the heat on this pass, which is hardly shaded. The road is in good condition but the rough surface slows down a bit.

A very tough climb with many variations in gradient. Very good surface, especially at the start of Chapareillan. You need to keep your pedal to the metal if you want to get to the top...

Unanimously, the most difficult side of the Granier pass. One of the less frequented too (certainly for this reason :-)) The average percentages of the second part are telling, and moreover the slope is very irregular, very steep portions following easier ones. Unfortunately, the climb doesn't reveal many views, except at the beginning on the Montmélian cluse and at the very end on the very impressive Granier cliff, which dominates it all along.

Combined with the Cucheron pass towards Saint-Pierre-d'Entremont, then the Coq pass towards Saint-Hugues, this is an ideal outing to test your form... and your small brakets!

Be careful if you go downhill, it is very, very fast and the turns are often difficult to negotiate. Avoid it if you are not sure of your brakes.
