A quiet climb where the few cars you come across are from the locals who live in the villages. The first few kilometres are very steep, with occasional ramps linked to false flats and slightly downhill sections.

The hardest kilometre of the climb is just before reaching the village of Cortes, where the Sanctuary Church of San Melchor is located.

After crossing the village there is a downhill stretch before reaching the second part of the ascent where the vegetation opens up to give way to spectacular views. You can see the first part of the climb as you gain altitude. It is worth making stops to appreciate the different peaks of Las Ubiñas Natural Park.

Once you have reached the top there are several possibilities. The most demanding is to start the descent towards Pola de Lena and take the detour one kilometre later to the Alto del Gamoniteiro, where you face the final 7 km of hell. This option would leave you with almost 28 km of ascent in your legs.

Another possibility is to descend towards Santa Marina and reach the same point from where the ascent started (circular route - in case you want to get closer by car). This same descent can be linked to the Valle del Oso and you can climb other nearby climbs such as La Ermita del Alba (finish in La Vuelta 2015).

Another option is to go down to Pola de Lena from the summit to take the train that leaves you in less than 40 minutes in Oviedo.
