A quiet climb where the few cars you come across are from the locals who live in the villages. The first few kilometres are very steep, with occasional ramps linked to false flats and slightly downhill sections.

The hardest kilometre of the climb is just before reaching the village of Cortes, where the Sanctuary Church of San Melchor is located.

After crossing the village there is a downhill stretch before reaching the second part of the ascent where the vegetation opens up to give way to spectacular views. You can see the first part of the climb as you gain altitude. It is worth making stops to appreciate the different peaks of Las Ubiñas Natural Park.

Once you have reached the top there are several possibilities. The most demanding is to start the descent towards Pola de Lena and take the detour one kilometre later to the Alto del Gamoniteiro, where you face the final 7 km of hell. This option would leave you with almost 28 km of ascent in your legs.

Another possibility is to descend towards Santa Marina and reach the same point from where the ascent started (circular route - in case you want to get closer by car). This same descent can be linked to the Valle del Oso and you can climb other nearby climbs such as La Ermita del Alba (finish in La Vuelta 2015).

Another option is to go down to Pola de Lena from the summit to take the train that leaves you in less than 40 minutes in Oviedo.

Subida tranquila en la que los pocos coches que puedes cruzarte son de los vecinos que viven en los pueblos. Primeros kilómetros muy tendidos con rampas puntuales encadenadas con falsos llanos y tramos de ligero descenso.

El kilómetro más duro de la ascensión se encuentra junto antes de llegar al pueblo de Cortes donde se encuentra la Iglesia Santuario de San Melchor.

Tras cruzar el pueblo se encadena un terreno de descenso antes de llegar a la segunda parte de las ascensión donde la vegetación se abre para dar paso a unas vistas espectaculares. Se observa la primera parte de la subida a medida que se va ganando altura. Merece la pena hacer paradas para apreciar las distintas cimas del Parque Natural de Las Ubiñas.

Una vez coronado el alto existen varias posibilidades. La más exigente, iniciar el descenso hacia Pola de Lena y tomar el desvío un kilómetro después al Alto del Gamoniteiro donde te enfrentas a sus 7 km infernales finales. Esta opción te dejaría casi 28 km de ascenso en las piernas.

Otra de las posibilidades es bajar hacia Santa Marina y llegar al mismo punto desde el que se inicio la subida (ruta circular - por si quieres acercarte en coche). Esta misma bajada se puede enlazar con el Valle del Oso y poder ascender otras subidas cercanas como La Ermita del Alba (final en La Vuelta 2015).

Otra de las opciones es bajar a Pola de Lena desde la cima para coger el tren que te deja en menos de 40 minutos en Oviedo.
