The first five kilometres run through beautiful scenery and the surroundings mean you literally forget you are pedalling, this part of the road is very quiet and you rarely come across a car.
After passing the hamlet of Breien, by far the most difficult part of the climb begins, with many short, very steep ramps and then small areas where you can recover, which is why a "relatively low" percentage per kilometre is achieved there. The gradient ends at the modern road and you pass through the village of Tiers, where it is only slightly uphill for about 4 kilometres. After crossing a river, the road climbs steeply for a kilometre, but much less steeply than on the small road.
The last 7 kilometres are not quite constant upwards, so it is difficult to find a rhythm, but in comparison this part is relatively easy.
There is no real summit, but the climb is definitely worth it.

Of all the famous climbs and passes in the immediate vicinity, the Niger Pass (we use the German spelling because the locals here are overwhelmingly German-speaking) seems an unremarkable middle ground. Nothing could be further from the truth. This climb is long and hard, with the devil at the beginning instead of at the end!
The climb starts with an inconspicuous turn in the busy Blumau. Follow the sign "Brie". If you end up in a busy tunnel, take the easy route, "Brie" is a must! After this you will see the first of many 20% warning signs.
The first 5 kilometres the road follows the swirling mountain stream through a deep narrow gorge. The gradient varies wildly and it is difficult to find a fine rhythm. You cross small bridges, through galleries and past old farms/watermills.
In the hamlet of Brie, the hardest part of the climb begins. For 2 kilometres, you climb up to 24 metres, but nowhere does the percentage drop below 10 metres. At 37/28 it was just about manageable. This is the medieval road to Tiers; it is narrow but fortunately well surfaced. Watch out for oncoming traffic!
Just before Tiers you come to the modern pass road. There follow 4 easy kilometres through the village of Tiers, known among hikers as the starting point for many hut tours through the Rosengarten/Schlern massif.
In St. Zyprian the final part of the climb begins with one steep kilometre with peaks of, again, towards 20%. After this, the climb stabilises with 6 kilometres around 6%. You climb through a forest with a view of the rock faces of the Rosengarten. The real work is done then. The finish is at a chalet where you can have a drink and enjoy the view. If you descend this col, it is better to follow the modern pass road after Tiers.

Niks is minder waar.
