This is the perfect climb. It has everything - perfect surface, almost no vehicle traffic, massive ascent, multiple hairpin turns with road clinging to the alternating edges of the two deep gorges that provide plenty of hair-raising views. Think about it as a little shorter version of Mont Ventoux that is still undiscovered by the general cycling population.
The beginning and a section just before Polopos are punishing but manageable. After passing Polopos the climb gets easier, with wide switchbacks and even less traffic. Remember that the top of the ascent is a bit after the Haza del Lino, in the cork forest - don't stop at the intersection!
The proximity to the sea and the height difference cause the weather to be quite unpredictable - it could be chilly on the bottom and hot on the top (or the other way round), thick clouds show and disappear unexpectedly, the sun makes you sweat and the wind tries to blow you over the guiderail.
I rode this road a few times and will definitely return to ride it again. Just don't expect to beat the best times here - this climb is a route of the Polopos Wine Festival & Bike Race with local legends pushing their legs to the max.
Spectacular climb from the sea through La Guapa and along Polopos with as highlight the beautiful windings around the mountain tops around km 3. It starts quite steep at the turnoff in the village of La Guapa. The first four/five kilometres are characterized by sections of 11-12% alternating with less steep sections. It's not really easy to get into a rhythm, so it's good to ride the less steep parts on reserve. Fortunately, it was semi-overcast and the sea breeze from the relatively cool water surface (end of May) provided some refreshment. After five kilometers the road flattens out a bit, after which the gradient picks up just before Polopos. Once past Polopos a spectacular set of hairpins follows. At the turnoff to Albunol you know you're almost there.
Tips:
1) You can refill water in Polopos, but you have to get off the climb to get to the village.
