Tastes differ, but I liked the climb to Chambran and the climb to Le pré de Mme Carle more than this one. Of course do all three, fine combo. The worst holes in the road surface were filled in mid-August, but on a small stretch the tarmac disappeared. Not recommended with thin tyres. Bit of walking is also possible, of course.

The climb is easy and without too much traffic (departure around midday). Although it is shaded on many sections, there is no wind and in summer it is very hot, fortunately there is a refreshment bar at the finish for those who want it, and a swimming pool for those who want it. The only downside is that the road is in poor condition, especially at the end, and can be a bit dangerous going downhill, as it's also quite narrow once you've passed Villard. I'd recommend it, especially as the scenery is well worth the effort and the climb is fun.

First of all, Vallouise seems like a very pleasant village for a stopover.
And there are plenty of climbs in this pretty area.
Our coastline hesitates for a long time before deciding to be a real coastline. But when it assumes its identity as a coast, it does so rather well: the change to 13% is well felt.
Rogier's commentary and Martijn's photo had convinced me that the ride was beautiful.
And indeed, it is superb from start to finish. Which isn't often the case. It's powerful and lively. Water is everywhere, always present. The Parc des Écrins is impressive.
The road is in less than perfect condition. Totally degraded on the last kilometre.
You often hit the brakes on the descent...
In short, a real treat! A must-do.
PS: as a bonus photo, a tribute to the sulphurous Madame Carle! Her story is fascinating!

A lovely and tough climb in a beautiful wooded area. Because of this, you cycle a lot in the shade. The road surface is terrible in some parts, with holes and (especially in the middle) stones on the road. The gradient was not too bad, although it is still steep because of the road surface. Little traffic on the road (cycled around 11:00). The scenery is beautiful on high mountains and with a swirling river almost constantly at your side. However, when descending, you cannot (while riding) enjoy the view. You need your full attention for descending on this steep and bad road! Refilling water is possible in Le Villard.

Water bijvullen is mogelijk in Le Villard.

Despite the bad road surface and the many stones on the road, this is one of the most beautiful climbs in the area. Nowhere else do you get so deep into the heart of the Ecrins massif. In terms of traffic, it is here in the summer months in the morning busy with cars of hikers who go to the refuge les Bans, these drive around 15:00 back. In the meantime you have the climb for yourself. Outside July and August you are always alone here.

The view is amazing: beautiful high mountains, large waterfalls, forests full of larches and roaring rivers. Highly recommended if you are not afraid of a lesser road surface.

Super nice, really a must. And do not be put off by the above description of the road surface. It's all true but most of it is fine and if you pay attention you should be fine with an expensive carbon bike. Because it is not a through road you really feel alone in the mountains!
