For us, this climb started from Champagne Valromey. Without expectations and without a battle plan, we approached the climb and enjoyed the warm weather. When we arrived in Arviere en Valromey, the climbing began. Although we are used to some climbing, this climb surprised us enormously. After some tough kilometres we soon had to switch to the lightest gear and changing gears was no longer an option. Halfway up the climb, very steep kilometres pile up. Walls are the only way to stand, zigzagging is the solution. (I dare you;)). We found some cooling in the shadows of the trees. Take plenty of water with you. We have spotted only 1 water point. Motor vehicles can be counted on one hand. Leaving the forest behind us, the landscape changes to meadow and open fields with views of other mountain peaks. It remains steep. Arriving at the top, you enjoy a beautiful view of the Lac de Bourges. You can eat there and recover from the shock.

Contrary to what many people think, it is not the route from Artemare, but from Tallisieu la "Directissime"; or the most direct route from the foot to the top of the Grand Colombier. Where the first 7 km from Artemare still very easy, you have from Tallisieu immediately spicy parts. Also because you can always take a short cut from the D105. Actually, the advice here is to always take the roads/entrances on the right-hand side of the D105 to drive the most direct route. Especially the part from Ouche to Chavornay is a direct hit and already in the double digits. In Virieu le Petit starts the well-known tough part, but here too is a surprise: the generally known route is via the D120C, where the road slowly gets steeper. However, 1 turn earlier you can already turn right and shorten a piece towards the D120C. This abbreviation means that here you already have to face sections of 20-25% When you get back on the D120C, this part feels like false flat, while here it's just up to 10 percent! The rest of the climb is familiar and the same as the Artemare route.
