Climbed twice a year since
Vernet-les-bains is still as hard as ever... but the pain is forgotten thanks to the superb scenery.
Some really tough sections since Py to be taken slowly so as not to burn out! A must do

Montée effectuée 2 fois par an depuis
A faire absolument

I made the ascent early in the morning in July.
The road is pleasant with little traffic in summer (cul de sac). The surface is quite good despite some gravel, especially from Py onwards.
The pass is smooth and steady and in the shade (in the morning) for the first few kilometres as far as Py. Don't get carried away, though, as the second part of the climb is in the heat of the summer, with frequent changes of gradient that require you to play with your derailleur.

It's a tough climb that's split into 2 sections. The first part is as far as Py. It's manageable even if there's a lot of traffic, but the coolness due to the vegetation is a relief before the ordeal...
When you cross the bridge at Py, you see the road hiding to the left between the buildings and the second part begins with 16% for about a hundred metres.
Then you have nearly 3km a plus 10% without being able to recover. And what doesn't help is that the sun won't let you go for the whole of the second part. So think about water bottles (or avoid doing summer like me). The view from the summit isn't extraordinary. The route isn't too bad, but it's in the Pyrenees, so it's not a good return.

I started the climb from Sahorre, because I feel it really starts there. Until Py, you ride through a kind of Gorge, which is very beautiful. For my feeling, the climb here was harder than I expected. If you see 5 percent per kilometre then you think, no problem, but also here were 8 percent pieces and you underestimate it quickly. From Py it gets steeper, but I expected that too, so you adjust your speed accordingly. The climb is quite capricious, not constantly steep, you have to like that. At the top, the view is a bit disappointing, but if you descend a bit, there are some open parts between the trees with nice views.

The description is right about those last few kilometres.
In that village of Py, you suddenly see the road between the houses rise up into the air and the irregularities begin.
After every turn it is a party, either the percentages are killing you, or you are lucky and the variation decreases a little.
At the top it is good to stay with nice views.
In the descent you can choose an alternative descent at Sahorre which is certainly worthwhile in that region.
