Had already climbed the Soulor from the other side (Ferrières) a few days earlier after climbing the Spandelles from Argelès-Gazost. Then didn't do the Aubisque and regretted it anyway. So on 4 August 2024 I did the climb from Argelès-Gazost and it was beautiful. The previous descriptions give all the relevant information and I too find this a very nice climb, especially between Soulor and Aubisque. Only I still found the last 2 km quite tough. Was a bit surprised because the profile and also the other descriptions didn't indicate that. But well, maybe I was just a bit tired on my last day cycling in the Pyrenees. Enjoyed it immensely. And what an extremely good tarmac everywhere, especially compared to that in the Italian Aosta Valley where I was last year. There, descending was really tricky due to hedge only asphalt. Here I continuously felt very comfortable while descending.
Was de Soulor al paar dagen eerder vanaf de andere kant (Ferrières) opgereden na de Spandelles vanaf Argelès-Gazost te hebben beklommen. Toen de Aubisque niet gedaan en daarna toch spijt. Dus op 4 augustus 2024 alsnog de klim vanaf Argelès-Gazost gedaan en dat was prachtig. De eerdere beschrijvingen geven alle relevante informatie en ook ik vind dit een hele mooie klim vooral tussen Soulor en Aubisque. Alleen vond ik de laatste 2 km toch behoorlijk pittig. Was wat verrast omdat het profiel en ook de andere beschrijvingen dat niet aangaven. Maar goed, misschien was ik gewoon wat vermoeid op mijn laatste dag fietsen in de Pyreneeën. Heb er enorm van genoten. En wat is het asfalt overal extreem goed, zeker in vergelijking met dat in de Italiaanse Aostavallei waar ik vorig jaar was. Daar was afdalen echt link door het slechte asfalt. Hier voelde ik me continu heel comfortabel tijdens het afdalen.
Cool! Set off as the fog lifted and the summit was still shrouded in mist. As we rode, the sun broke through and the summit emerged. From Argeles, the climb starts quiet and easy. From the last large village to the top of the Soulor, things get serious. From the Soulor, the best part starts. It doesn't get tough anymore. You see your goal in front of you, the landscape is beautiful and sheep, cows and horses accompany you.
At the summit, fortify yourself with a Gatteau Basque and off you go!
Gaaf! Vertrokken terwijl de mist optrok en de top nog in nevelen gehuld was. Al rijdend brak de zon door en kwam de top vrij. Vanuit Argeles begint de klim rustig en eenvoudig. Vanaf het laatste grote dorp tot aan de top van de Soulor wordt het menens. Vanaf de Soulor breekt het mooiste deel aan. Zwaar wordt het niet meer. Je ziet je doel voor je liggen, landschap is prachtig en schapen, koeien en paarden vergezellen je.
Op de top even aansterken met een Gatteau Basque en dalen maar!
Very nice climb. Most beautiful in that area. was 3 days in August in the Pyrenees. Tourmalet done Hautacam and Aubisque via Soulor. The latter is the most beautiful for me especially the stretch tuasen Soukor and top Aubisque is fantastic. Landachap. Wild horses. Views. Lucky 3 days full sun and steel blue skies. Beautiful long stretches in the descent.
Heel mooie klim. Mooiste in die buurt. was 3 dagen in augustus in de Pyreneen. Tourmalet gedaan Hautacam en Aubisque via Soulor. De laatste is de mooiste voor mij zeker het stuk tuasen Soukor en top Aubisque is fantastisch. Landachap. Wilde paarden. Vergezichten. Geluk gehad 3 dagen volle zon en staalblauwe luchten. Mooie lange stukken in de afdaling.
The D918 from Arrens-Masous up to the Col de Solour was well signposted as closed, but we took our chances and hoped we could get through. We did, so had the road virtually to ourselves. The CdS is a steady medium gradient so you can get into a nice rhythm and has nice view across the valley nearer the top. However, the real highlight is the part between CdS and the Col d'Aubisque. The cycle along the Cirque de Litor is breathtaking with wonderful views down the steep valley below. The road is a fantastic piece of engineering, literally carved out of the cliff (see second photo below), and with easy, gentle gradients. Sadly the top of the CdA was in the clouds, so we didn't get much a view at the top, and it was cold (4 degrees centigrade in mid June) so make sure you check the weather and have the correct clothing! Escorted back down the top of the CdS by a few hundred sheep.
Not so tough as a climb: the first kilometres are still an Ardennes slope rather than a col, then it's recuperating on the outside leaf over a pretty busy road, until it calms down beyond Arrens. Then the Soulor is the centre of gravity of the climb, but even this is not really tough. Then you get a few descending kilometres, before starting the final climb to the Aubisque. Where the climb does stand out: the views between Soulor and Aubisque are magnificent! This climb may not be the highlight of a cycling trip in the Luz Valley, but it is a perfect first col of the holiday to get the climbing feeling (again), before tackling, say, the Tourmalet or Hautacam. Not for people afraid of large mammals ;-), a sheep, cow or horse might cross the road.
Als klim niet zo zwaar: de eerste kilometers zijn nog een Ardennenhelling in plaats van een col, daarna is het op het buitenblad recupereren over een best drukke weg, tot het voorbij Arrens kalmer wordt. Dan is de Soulor het zwaartepunt van de beklimming, maar ook dit is niet echt zwaar. Dan krijg je enkele dalende kilometers, voor je de laatste helling naar de Aubisque aanvat. Waarin de klim zich wel onderscheidt: het uitzicht tussen Soulor en Aubisque is magnifiek! Deze klim is het misschien niet het hoogtepunt van een fietsreis in de vallei van Luz, maar wel een perfecte eerste col van de vakantie om het klimgevoel (opnieuw) te pakken te krijgen, vooraleer je pakweg de Tourmalet of Hautacam aanvat. Niet voor mensen die schrik hebben van grote zoogdieren ;-), er durft al eens een schaap, koe of paard de weg over te steken.
I liked the part between Soulor and Aubisque best, riding the "balcony" road Cirque du Litor with spectacular views. Of course, that part is almost a freebie, as the Soulor is the real climb from this end. Foggy and cold Soulor summit, but it cleared up during the break at the restaurant. After the Aubisque, I went back but then descended to Eschartès for the Spandelles - not my best decision, as that one was tough as nails in the by now blistering sun.
So yeah, that went a bit wrong. Very hot (30+) and first I cycled up the Hautacam as a warm-up. Then I went the other way towards the Soulor and then the famous Aubisque. The long ascent to the Soulor (in itself not that hard) was a bit disappointing, but once on the Soulor (what a horror climb!) my system broke down and I sat down in a stream for a while. On character I reached the top anyway. In a terrible state I wanted to turn around and go home, but other cyclists managed to convince me to continue to the Aubisque. After a few cokes I got back on and indeed. How glad I am that I cycled on after all. I think it was the most breathtaking landscape I have seen in the Pyrenees. Sheep on the road, wild horses on the terrace, eagles soaring above your head and insane views. And yes, that climb is a warm bath after that sneaky Soulor. This one should rightly not be left out, what an adventure.
Ja dat ging dus een beetje mis. Loeiheet ( 30+ ) en eerst als opwarmertje de Hautacam opgefietst. Daarna de andere kant op richting de Soulor en daar aan vast de beroemde Aubisque. De lange aanloop naar de Soulor ( op zich niet zo zwaar ) viel me wat tegen, maar eenmaal op de Soulor ( wat een horrorklim! ) begaf mijn systeem het en ben ik even in een beekje gaan zitten. Op karakter toch de top bereikt. In erbarmelijke staat wilde ik omkeren naar huis, maar andere fietsers hebben me ervan weten te overtuigen toch door te fietsen naar de Aubisque. Na een paar cola’s weer opgestapt en inderdaad. Wat ben ik blij dat ik toch ben doorgefietst. Ik denk wel het meest adembenemende landschap dat ik heb mogen aanschouwen in de Pyreneën. Schapen op de weg, wilde paarden op het terras, adelaars die boven je hoofd zweven en waanzinnige vergezichten. En ja, die klim is een warm bad na die geniepige Soulor. Deze mag je met recht niet links laten liggen, wat een avontuur.

The Aubisque is a nice climb that is nowhere really difficult. A fine climb suitable as a first Pyrenean col. The road surface is good, but there can be a lot of motorised traffic. I unfortunately didn't have good weather to enjoy the views at the summit, I would love to come back there again!
De Aubisque is een mooie klim die nergens echt moeilijk is. Een prima klim geschikt als eerste Pyreneeën col. Het wegdek is goed, maar er kan veel gemotoriseerd verkeer zijn. Ik had helaas geen mooi weer om van het uitzicht op de top te kunnen genieten, ik kom er graag nog een keer terug!
Surely the heaviest part of the climb are the last 7km of the Soulor.
From the top of the Soulor it is downhill for a while and then with mild percentages to the Aubisque.
Just as well, because at least then you can look around you instead of at the tarmac or at your cassette in the hope that you still have a tooth left.
Views are great, both up and down.
Zwaartepunt van de klim zijn toch echt wel de laatste 7km van de Soulor.
Vanaf de top van de Soulor is het even dalen en daarna met milde percentages naar de Aubisque.
Maar goed ook, want dan kun je tenmisnte om je heen kijken ipv naar het asfalt of naar je cassette in de hoop dat je nog een tandje over hebt.
Uitzichten zijn geweldig, zowel omhoog als omlaag.
The views from the Col du Soulor to the Aubisque are breathtaking. Really beautiful. It was insanely hot and there was no wind at all. I worked myself dry to get it under 2 hours and I think I did, but I needed 3.5 litres of fluids to get up. Normally I always rush down, but now I stopped to enjoy all the birds that were flying up the mountain and passing close by. Actually, I wanted to go back to Lourdes via the Spandelles, but then you have to descend to Soulor and not go straight over the mountain. Saves you also about 25 km extra. ;-)
De uitzichten van de Col du Soulor naar de Aubisque zijn adembenemend. Echt heel mooi. Het was wel bloedverziekend heet en geen zuchtje wind. Ik heb me helemaal leeg getrokken om hem onder de 2 uur te rijden en volgens mij is dat gelukt, maar ik had 3,5 liter vocht nodig om boven te komen. Normaal knal ik altijd naar beneden, nu ben ik gestopt om te genieten van alle vogels op langs de berg omhoog stegen en vlakbij langskomen. Ik wilde eigenlijk via de Spandelles terug naar Lourdes, maar dan moet je dus terug afdalen naar Soulor en niet rechtdoor de berg over. Scheelt je ook nog eens zo'n 25 km extra. ;-)
Magnificent climb in 2 stages. In the beautiful village of Arrens, you can refill your water supply before the ascent to the Soulor. Climb with many bends through the forest. Please note that the restaurant on Soulor only opens at 1000 hrs on weekdays. There is no water point.
After the top of Soulor, there is a short descent and then a beautiful part to the Aubisque. Take some light with you for the (short) runs but above all enjoy the beautiful views towards and on the tot of d'Aubisque 😃👌.
Schitterende beklimmming in 2 etappes. In het mooie dorpje Arrens kun je water bijvullen voordat je de beklimming naar de Soulor begint. Klim met veel bochten door het bos. Houd er rekening mee dat het restaurant op de Soulor door de weeks pas om 1000 uur open gaat. Er is geen waterpunt.
Na de top van de Soulor komt een korte afdaling en komt het schitterende stuk naar de Aubisque. Neem licht mee voor de (korte) runnen maar geniet vooral van het mooie uitzicht richting en op de tot van d’Aubisque 😃👌
A well-known, famous and even infamous name. Known and famous because since 1910 already 70 transits in his Tour history. Infamous for the fall of Wim van Est, then yellow jersey wearer who skidded in the descent and plunged into the "cirque du Litor". Kees Pellenaars, his sports director at the time, tied 40 racing tyres together to get him out of the ravine without too many injuries. With this climb, I nevertheless feel like : Yes, so what? In 2019, I accompanied a cycling tour team during their Trans Pyrenees from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea and rode it, albeit with the support vehicle, in the other direction. That is really something different. The scenery is beautiful though, especially the Cirque just mentioned. Nice if you're in the neighborhood, but for me once was enough.
Een bekende, beroemde en zelfs beruchte naam. Bekend en beroemd want sinds 1910 al 70 doortochten in zijn Tourgeschiedenis. Berucht om deval van Wim van Est, toen gele truidrager die in de afdaling slipte en de "cirque du Litor" in dook. Kees Pellenaars, zijn toenmalige sportdirecteur bond 40 racebandjes aan elkaar om hem, zonder al te veel kleerscheuren uit het ravijn te halen. Bij deze klim heb ik desondanks zoiets van : Yes, so what? In 2019 begeleidde ik een wielertoeristenteam tijdens hun Trans Pyreneeën van de Atlantische oceaan naar de Middellandse zee en reed er, weliswaar met de volgwagen langs de andere kant op. Die is echt wel andere koek. De omgeving is wel prachtig, vooral de net genoemde Cirque. Leuk als je in de buurt bent, maar voor mij was een keer voldoende.
What a fantastic climb. Until the village of Arrens it is false flat and not very special, then it is a bit steep to the top of the Soulor but I think to do well. For the top of the soulor you look at the huge rock masses to reach great height. Then you drive on a narrow road on the side of the mountain first slightly descends and then rises again. There are also a few tunnels in which one is very dark. The view is also fantastic. You look out over deep valleys and high mountain tops.
Wat een fantastisch mooie beklimming. Tot aan het dorpje arrens is het vals plat en nog niet heel bijzonder, daarna is het even pittig naar de top van de Soulor maar volgens mij goed te doen. Voor de top van de soulor kijk je tegen de enorme rots massa's aan die tot grote hoogte rijken. Daarna rij je over een smalle weg die aan de zijkant van de berg eerst iets daalt en dan weer stijgt. Er zitten ook een paar tunnels in waarvan één erg donker. Het uitzicht is daar ook fantastische. Je kijkt uit over diepe dalen en hoge bergtoppen.
Irregular, but a nice climb. This is the easy side of the Aubisque. Until the village of Arrens-Marsous it is easy, with occasional flat stretches. Then you turn right towards the Col de Soulor. If you have reached the top begins a descent of a few kilometers, then it is still a kilometer or 7 towards the top. It is never really difficult, doable!
Onregelmatig, maar een fijne klim. Dit is de "makkelijke" kant van de Aubisque. Tot het dorp Arrens-Marsous is het prima te doen, met af en toe een vlak stuk. Daarna draai je naar rechts richting de Col de Soulor. Als je die top hebt bereikt begint een afdaling van een paar kilometer, waarna het nog een kilometer of 7 richting de top is. Echt moeilijk wordt het nergens, prima te doen!
Iconic climb in the Tour history, preceded by its lower brother the Soulor, cycled up from Argelès-Gazost.
Right at the start a good uphill, followed by a relatively flat plateau in an open plain and then from Arrens 8 km. of solid climbing to the top of the Soulor. What follows is one of the most beautiful and breathtaking cycling roads you can get under your wheels. First downhill on a narrow road and then in a long uphill turn like a gutter against the rock face around the deep ravine of the limestone amphitheatre (Cirque du Litor) to the pass height. The summit with 3 large bikes over an auberge (food&drinks) is a 360° scenery of a pure nature. This spectacular final route contains two dark and wet tunnels (short and a bit longer) and I encountered horses, goats, sheep and cows both next to and on the narrow road with little interest for cyclists, let alone to get out of the way.
This is a must for every mountain cyclist if only for the part between Soulor and Aubisque.
Hopefully clouds and fog will not hide the scenery!
Iconische beklimming uit de tour geschiedenis, vooraf gegaan door zijn lager broertje de Soulor, op gefietst vanuit Argelès-Gazost.
Direct bij de start even goed bergop, gevolgd door een relatief vlak plateau in een open vlakte om dan vanaf Arrens 8 km. stevig klimwerk tot de top van de Soulor te fietsen. Wat dan volgt behoort tot de meest mooie en adembenemende fietswegen die je onder je wielen kan krijgen. Eerst even bergaf over de smalle weg om dan in een lange draaibeweging bergop als een dakgoot tegen de rotswand rond het diepe ravijn van het kalkstenen amfitheater( Cirque du Litor )te draaien naar de pashoogte. De top met 3 grote fietsen over een auberge (eten&drank) is een 360° decor van een puur natuurgebied. Deze spectaculaire slotroute bevat nog twee donkere en natte tunnels (korte en iets langere) en ik kwam er zowel naast als op de smalle weg paarden,geiten,schapen en koeien tegen met weinig interesse voor fietsers,laat staan om uit de weg te gaan.
Dit is verplichte kost voor elke bergfietser alleen al maar voor het deel tussen Soulor en Aubisque.
Hopelijk dat wolken en mist het decor niet verbergen!
By far the most beautiful climb of the Pyrenees. From the top of Soulor you first start the descent and then it is still a few kilometers climbing with moderate percentages through the beautiful Cirque de Litor. Through a breathtaking green environment and steep ravines you finally reach the top, where you are treated to an amazing view. Not the most challenging climb, but in terms of scenery hard to beat.
Met stip de mooiste beklimming van de Pyreneeën. Vanaf de top van de Soulor zet je eerst de afdaling in en vervolgens is het nog enkele kilometers klimmen met gematigde percentages door het prachtige Cirque de Litor. Door een adembenemende groene omgeving en steile ravijnen bereik je tenslotte de top, waar je getrakteerd wordt op een waanzinnig uitzicht. Weliswaar niet de meest uitdagende klim, maar qua decor moeilijk overtrefbaar.

A (rear) light in the dark tunnel is not an unnecessary luxury, but otherwise an absolute must! Rare panoramas on the last part after the Soulor.
Een (achter)lichtje is in het donkere tunneltje geen overbodige luxe, maar verder een absolute aanrader! Zeldzaam mooie vergezichten op het laatste deel na de Soulor.
A beautiful climb with the 2 famous dark tunnels (bicycle lights recommended) and stopped at the plaque where Wim van Est in 1951, the famous turn missed and disappeared in the ravine.
Een prachtige klim met de 2 beroemde donkere tunnels (fietsverlichting aanbevolen) en gestopt bij de plaquette waar Wim van Est in 1951, het beroemde bochtje miste en in het ravijn verdween.
Did the climb today. The first 3 km are steep, but when you pass the first village, it is false flat until the foot of the Soulor. The col de Soulor is 7 km at 8% and no hairpin turns. That means no moment of rest. I found it similar to the Ventoux, but shorter. The half bends follow each other rapidly. After the top of the Soulor it descends for a km and then a bit false flat and a dark tunnel of 100m. The last 2 km are difficult but doable. The road from Soulor to the Aubisque is good but narrow and winding.
Vandaag de klim gedaan. De eerste 3 km zijn gelijk steil, maar als je het eerste dorp door bent, is ie tot aan de voet van de Soulor vals plat. De col de Soulor is 7 km a 8% en geen haarspeld bochten. Dat betekent geen moment van rust. Ik vond hem vergelijkbaar met de Ventoux, maar dan korter. De halve bochten volgen elkaar snel op. Voorbij de top van de Soulor is het een km dalen en dan eerst een stuk vals plat en een donker tunneltje van 100m. De laatste 2 km zijn nog lastig, maar wel goed te doen. De weg van de Soulor naar de Aubisque is goed maar wel smal en bochtig.
The aubisque is and remains a very nice climb. I cycled it myself twice, the profile (which is still missing) and the figures give a distorted picture of the climb. The descents are directly followed by very difficult parts.
De aubisque is, en blijft een hele mooie klim. Ben hem zelf 2x opgefietst, het profiel (dat nog ontbreekt) en de cijfers geven een vertekend beeld bij de klim. De stukjes afdalingen worden direct gevolgd met hele lastige stukken.
