Incredibly tough climb. The cobbles are so bad here, you almost feel like you could fall at any moment. There are thick grooves between the cobbles and the cobbles themselves are also very uneven. The gradient makes this climb that much harder. Pfff gruelling.
Ontzettend zware klim. De kasseien liggen hier zo slecht, dat je haast elk moment het gevoel hebt dat je kan vallen. Er zitten dikke groeven tussen de kasseien en zelf zijn de kasseien ook zeer oneffen. De hellingsgraad maakt deze klim nog zoveel zwaarder. Pfff afzien.
Poor cobbled road, quite doable in dry conditions. Also bit of cobbled (slightly) downhill where you come out at a T-junction. Be careful.
Slechte kasseiweg, best te doen in droge omstandigheden. Ook stukje kassei (licht) bergaf waarbij je uitkomt op een T-kruising. Oppassen.
In fact, it should only be done in dry weather! Which is what I found out this week after climbing it... in the rain, for the first time (I'd already done it once in dry weather). Despite my 32mm tyres, the rear wheel kept spinning and the grass growing between the cobbles didn't help matters. All that to say that I was happy to get to the top without falling or putting my foot down!
En effet, c'est à faire exclusivement par temps sec ! Ce que j'ai constaté cette semaine après l'avoir grimpée… sous la pluie, pour la première fois (je l'avais déjà fait une fois par temps sec). Malgré mes pneus de 32 mm de section, la roue arrière patinait sans arrêt et l'herbe qui pousse entre les pavés n'arrangeait évidemment rien. Tout cela pour dire que j'étais content d'arriver au sommet sans être tombé ni avoir mis pied à terre !
Taken in November 2022 and gee what bad shape it was in. Wet, uneven cobblestones combined with a lot of leaves made it almost impossible to ride up smoothly. Nice thing to take with you if you want to ride the World Cup loop, but really recommended in dry weather.
In november 2022 afgelegd en jeetje wat lag die er slecht bij. Natte, oneven kasseien in combinatie met een hoop bladeren maakten het haast onmogelijk om vlot naar boven te rijden. Leuk ding om even mee te nemen als je de WK-lus wil rijden, maar toch echt aan te raden bij droog weer.
Steep thing, say! Before the announcement of the 2021 World Cup route, I didn't know it. A week later I was, of course, in the region to explore. I knew the Smeysberg and the Moskesstraat. And I knew those hurt. But this one is almost as bad. It's shorter than the two previous ones, but it's as steep as they come. And the cobblestones aren't bad in themselves, but they are a bit too far apart, which makes them feel heavy. Of course you can use the chicken run and ride on the path.
Steil ding, zeg! Voor de bekendmaking van het WK-parcours van 2021 kende ik hem niet. Een week later stond ik, uiteraard, in de regio om te verkennen. De Smeysberg en de Moskesstraat kende ik. En ik wist dat die pijn doen. Maar deze is bijna even erg. Hij is korter dan de vorige twee, maar qua hellingsgraad moet hij niet onderdoen. En de kasseien liggen an sich niet slecht, maar net iets te ver uit elkaar waardoor ze heel zwaar aanvoelen. Al kan je natuurlijk de chicken run gebruiken en op het padje fietsen.
For me a hidden pearl that I have discovered thanks to the World Cup. It starts climbing right away, then it flattens out a lot but at that moment you also see the wall you have to climb afterwards. The quality of the cobblestones leaves a lot to be desired in my opinion.
Voor mij toch een verborgen parel die ik dankzij het WK heb ontdekt. Het begint meteen te klimmen, dan wordt het ineens een pak vlakker maar op dat moment zie je ook de muur die je daarna nog omhoog moet. Kwaliteit van de kasseien laat wel te wensen over naar mijn mening.
Not too long but not easy climb with interesting percentages (10 to 11％).
The cobblestones have been redone but in spite of common sense: instead of placing them in staggered rows (like the bricks of a wall), they have been placed in strict alignment, both laterally and longitudinally. In addition, spaces as wide as the tires (or hoses) were left between each paving stone. Conclusion: the wheels risk to get stuck in the rows of paving stones and to unbalance you. Be careful! There are small shoulders, but they are very narrow and impassable.
Montée pas trop longue mais pas facile avec des pourcentages intéressants (10 à 11％).
Les pavés ont été refaits mais en dépit du bon sens : au lieu de les placer en quinconce (comme les briques d'un mur), on les a placés dans un strict alignement, aussi bien latéralement que longitudinalement. De plus, on a laissé entre chaque pavé des espaces aussi larges que les pneus (ou boyaux). Conclusion : les roues risquent de se coincer dans les rangées de pavés et de vous déséquilibrer. Prudence ! Il existe bien de petits accotement mais très étroits et impraticables.
Meegenomen in de WK tourroute. Ongekend: meestal rijden we er voorbij of draaien we af naar de Horenberg. Kasseien die er niet top bijliggen en de klim duurt ook langer dan je verwacht. Goed te doen, maar wel leuk volledig overdekt door bladeren.
A tiny side street of the main road that you just cycle past. Until I saw that it was in the World Cup circuit, I didn't know this climb at all before. I found it very hard. The cobblestones are much rougher than for example the new Moskestraat. So it is not really pleasant cycling. With enough steering you could go up via the edge/gutter. But given the very limited width of this, that's not for me :o) If a car would drive through, I think you'd have a problem riding side by side.
Een piepklein zijstraatje van de hoofdweg waar je zo voorbijfietst. Tot ik zag dat deze in het WK parcours zat, kende ik deze klim voorheen totaal niet. Ik vond het erg pittig. De kasseien liggen er veel ruwer bij dan bijvoorbeeld de vernieuwde Moskestraat. Waardoor het niet echt aangenaam fietsen is. Met voldoende stuurmanskunst zou je hem naar boven kunnen fietsen via de rand/goot. Maar gezien de zeer beperkte breedte hiervan is dat is aan mij niet besteed :o) Als er een auto zou doorrijden, heb je volgens mij een probleem om naast elkaar door te rijden.

Fierce climb. The cobblestones are good but they are pretty far apart so it's hard to gain speed. Definitely do it if you're in the area.
Pittige klim. Kasseien liggen er goed bij maar wel vrij ver uit elkaar waardoor het moeilijk is om snelheid te maken. Zeker eens doen als je in de buurt bent.
More spicy than expected. Riding in the gutter is possible, but loose on the back makes it much more challenging. The cobblestones aren't flattened at all, which makes it very difficult to go from one side to the other. Luckily it's over before you know it.
A pleasant surprise in the region.
Pittiger dan verwacht. In het gootje rijden is mogelijk, maar los op de rug maakt het veel uitdagender. De kasseien zijn helemaal niet afgevlakt, wat ervoor zorgt dat je van hot naar her wordt geslingerd en vaart maken zeer moeilijk is. Gelukkig is hij voorbij voor je het doorhebt.
Aangename verrassing in de streek.
One of the two cobbled hills, together with the Moskestraat, in the next World Cup. You can compare it with a mini Kwaremont. But then with the emphasis on mini. Nice to do but you have dozens of similar cobbled hills in the neighbourhood.
Een van de twee kasseihellingen samen met de Moskestraat van volgende WK. Je kan deze een beetje vergelijken met een mini Kwaremont. Maar dan vooral met de nadruk op mini. Leuk om te doen maar je hebt tientallen gelijkaardige kasseihellingen in de buurt
