The slope starts in a narrow, charming road in the village of Optielt. At the end, it gets a bit steeper. You have to cross an ambling gutter and after this you ride up a wider lane. This is where it got a bit harder and I felt like I couldn't move forward. I was glad when there was a small bit of descent. A bit further down the last bit towards the chapel. This part is not too bad. Only at the chapel it gets a bit steeper again. Road surface was in tip-top shape and I had not encountered ... read more

Road surface was in tip-top shape and I had not encountered any traffic.

Together with the Alsberg, this climb is in my opinion the best of 4 climbs in a radius of 1 km.
You can divide the climb in 3 parts ( streets ).
The first part, the Dag en Nachtstraat is a narrow road that is quite steep in the last 70 m.
Then turn right on a wider avenue and this is what you would call a smooth runner for any cyclist.
Once at the top and about 70 m downhill you turn left on the Donatusweg and here again a nice narrow road that winds wonderfully and not too steep uphill to finally end up at the chapel.
At the top you have again 3 possibilities. Left you can go to the infamous Vlooyberg tower. Straight ahead you can go to the statue of Eddy Merckx (a must for every cyclist) or turn right towards the top of Alsberg and Roeselberg.
Here you are at one of the highest points in the Hageland (103 metres above sea level).
