The climb to two lakes. The first one is azure blue or beautifully green (depending on the sun), the second one is crystal clear. The approach to about Anterselva di Mezzo is fairly flat, gives nice views of the valley and is easy. I avoided the busy main road up to that village by cycling through the villages and taking a very nice gravel cycle path next to the Rio Anterselva (see photo). Length not to be underestimated, done on a day with light rain regular climb not excessively hard except on a couple of occasions

Much tougher climb than it looks. It can basically be divided into two sections interspersed by the lake, where you can catch your breath and energy to tackle the section up to the tough and beautiful pass. Not to be missed!

I made the capital mistake of doing this climb in the middle of a hot sunny day in July; I saw 38 degrees on my Wahoo. I already had the climb to the Klammljoch (https://climbfinder.com/nl/beklimmingen/klammljoch-erlsbach) and 80 km in my legs. Then from Anterselva di Mezzo it gets really tough, because from there it is seriously steep without any shelter on a pretty boring road until Lago di Anterselva. I cycled from water point to water point and was even overtaken by a runner.

Once you reach the spectacular Lago di Anterselva, the road fortunately flattens out and you could even take a dip in the lake. I can say from experience that it is wonderful. With beautiful views of the rugged mountains on the north side. Don't forget to fill your water bottles at the barrier between the car park and the playground. Now comes the tough part of the climb to the Obersee. Please note that this is a one-way street. You may actually only go up between 30 and 45 minutes of the hour (see photo). The road is also really narrow and steep where vehicles can't just pass you. I left secretly at 20 minutes and when I heard the cars coming I stopped by the side of the road to let them pass. Then I climbed on. I would in any case not cycle up if there are cars and motorbikes coming down between :00 and :15. Although you cycle through a nice green forest, you hardly have any shelter from it. I was in survival mode on this part so unfortunately I did not enjoy it much. It is special to climb like this, but very steep (often enough >10% seen on my Wahoo).

All in all, a long climb with many faces: flat, open landscape, forest, steep sections, villages, a one-way road and two lakes. Definitely a must, but don't do it when it's boiling hot.
