A short but tough climb over a narrow, steep and sometimes cluttered forest road that picks up hard on the Epenerbaan after the first tough section, making it feel more compact but vicious than you might think beforehand.

I was reluctant to do this beforehand, but it was actually quite easy to do. It was quite steep for a few hundred metres, from the forest path, continuing on the Epenerbaan, but it did not take very long. The spur after that is quite easy. I would instinctively not put this climb in the ranking.
Ik was hier vooraf huiverig voor, maar het wad eigenlijk best goed te doen. Wel een paar honderd meter flink steil, vanaf het bospadje, doorlopend op de Epenerbaan, maar extreem lang duurde het niet. De uitloper daarna is vrij makkelijk. Ik zou deze klim gevoelsmatig absoluit niet op deze plek in de ranglijst plaatsen. Los daarvan wel een leuke variant op de standaard klim via de haarspeldbocht, wat extra steile meters kunnen natuurlijk nooit kwaad in Zuid-Limburg

No cyclists on the road, but some hikers and the road is quite overgrown in a few places so there is not much room sometimes. Descending here is not a wise thing to do (besides, it's really beautiful via the Epenerbaan).
Zwaar, maar minder zwaar dan ik had verwacht (of ik word uiteindelijk toch getrainder ;-)). Het begint met de reguliere klim waarna je rechtsaf het mini-weggetje inslaat. Dan begint de pret vrijwel meteen. Op kracht en met een hoop gehijg omhoog maar het weggetje duurt niet heel lang en spoedig zie je hem vlak voor de T-splitsing afvlakken (dus je denkt dat het steile stuk voorbij is). Wat je dan echter nog niet ziet is dat de weg naar rechts vrijwel net zo hard verder omhoog gaat. Dat betekent echt nog flink aanzetten. Goed om van te voren te beseffen.
Geen fietsers aangetroffen op het weggetje, wel wandelaars en de weg is op een paar plekken behoorlijk aan het dichtgroeien dus veel ruimte is er soms niet. Hier afdalen is niet verstandig (bovendien is dat via de Epenerbaan echt fraai).
I discovered this road, because my Garmin predicted the descent via this road. That is not a good idea. Just take the wide road with hairpin in the descent. In the climb this is certainly a nice variation to take and comparable with the Kersenpad on the Loorberg. It is treacherously steep and when you get back to the Epenerbaan it is certainly not over yet. The feeling in my legs was not yet such that I could shift up immediately, I now see that it doesn't immediately level off to 5％.
Ik ontdekte deze weg, omdat mijn Garmin de afdaling via dit weggetje had bedacht. Dat is geen goed idee. Pak in de afdaling gewoon de brede weg met haarspeldbocht. In de klim is dit zeker een leuke variatie om mee te pakken en vergelijkbaar met het Kersenpad op de Loorberg. Hij is wel verraderlijk stijl en als je weer op de Epenerbaan komt is het nog zeker niet voorbij. Het gevoel in mijn benen was toen in elk geval nog niet dusdanig dat ik al direct kon opschakelen, ik zie nu ook dat het daar nog niet direct afvlakt naar 5％.
Nice variation on the Epenerbaan, I've done it twice now, and every time I don't like the bit that follows after the Lange Bosweg, it goes on for a while.

Leuke variatie op de Epenerbaan, heb hem nu twee keer gedaan, en iedere keer verkijk ik me op het stuk dat nog volgt na de Lange Bosweg, deze trekt namelijk nog lekker een stukje door.

De korte versie van de lange bosweg doet me een beetje denken aan het kersenpad bij de loorberg. Leuke klim, als je het smalle bospaadje gehad hebt en bij het restaurant bent denkt dat je er al bent, heb je het mis. Vanaf daar begint het pas echt zwaar te worden
It is short and it really hurts. Maybe it is because you have to stay in the saddle because of the twigs and leaves on this narrow path. And if you are 'at the top' you come exactly at the toughest part of the Epenerbaan(12％) and you can continue for a few hundred meters.
Hij is kort en doet toch echt wel ff pijn. Komt misschien ook wel omdat je in het zadel moet blijven zitten vanwege de takjes en bladeren die er op dit smalle padje leggen. En als je dan 'boven' bent kom je precies op het zwaarste stuk van de Epenerbaan(12％) en kan je er nog een paar honderd meter tegenaan.

De Epenerbaan kan vrij druk zijn met verkeer, maar het stukje Lange Bosweg is dat niet. De beklimming start voor kasteel Vaalsbroek. Het is een relatief brede weg. De weg maakt na ~700 m een bocht naar links, waar je dus rechtdoor/rechtsaf moet het kleine weggetje op. Achter restaurant Lodge 7 kom je bij de Epenerbaan en ga je rechts voor een steil stuk het bos in. Na 300 meter vlakt het stuk af en loopt dan geleidelijk door tot de top (die ook de top van de Rugweg en de Camerig is).
The road itself is not very well maintained. But that doesn't really matter for the gravity, because that was nothing compared to what I expected. De weg zelf is niet zo goed onderhouden. Maar dat maakt niet zoveel uit voor de zwaarte, want dat was niks in vergelijking met wat ik had verwacht. Het is helemaal niet zo zwaar en zou qua fisieke zwaarte ergens op plek 6 van Nederland zou moeten zijn, niet op de derde. Maar alsnog wel een leuke beklimming.

leuke klim, avontuurlijk doordat je de massa achter laat en een smal paadje indraait. een overigens lekker steil paadje. maar naar mijn mening niet de nummer 3 van nederland. daar heeft hij iets te weinig venijn voor. maar een aanrader zeker als je na de Vaalserberg direct wilt doorpakken met een andere klim.
A dirty piece over a narrow path. And when you see the "normal" road and think you're there you get a piece of epener track that takes the last bit of power. There are many twigs and rubbish on the path, probably because it is not driven clean.
Een smerig stukje over een smal pad. En als je de "normale " weg ziet en denkt dat je er bent krijg je nog ff een stukkie epenerbaan voor je kiezen die het laatste beetje kracht kost. Er liggen veel takjes en rotzooi op het pad, waarschijnlijk omdat het niet schoon gereden wordt.
