An alternative of the traditional Camerig. In terms of heaviness, it doesn't matter. I would just do them both!

Nice climb, as others also say: after Buitenlust it runs a lot easier, although the hairpin bends really do make you feel like you're on a serious climb.

So if you want something different for once, just turn onto the greenway at the restaurant and go with that banana.
Ik moet eerlijk bekennen dat ik deze variant prefereer boven de andere, veel drukkere variant. Of dat nu is omdat je door het bos rijd of misschien een andere variatie? Echt heel veel makkelijker zou ik hem zeer zeker niet willen noemen.

The first part of the climb up to Buitenlust restaurant is similar to the climb going straight over Epenerbaan. The nice thing about this climb are the hairpin bends after you turn left at Buitenlust restaurant. After the bends, the climb flattens out. At the junction at the former forester's house, turn right onto Zevenweg and the climb continues slowly. From the Epenerbaan/Zevenwegenweg junction, the climb is again similar to the "straight ahead" version.
Het eerste deel van de klim tot aan restaurant Buitenlust is gelijk aan de klim die rechtdoor over de Epenerbaan gaat. Het leuke aan deze klim zijn de haarspeldbochten nadat je bij restaurant Buitenlust linksaf bent gegaan. Na de bochten vlakt de klim af. Als je op de splitsing bij de vml. boswachterswoning rechtsaf de Zevenwegweg opdraait loop het nog stuk langzaam op. Vanaf de splitsing Epenerbaan/Zevenwegenweg loopt de klim weer gelijk met de "rechtdoor" versie.

Nice long climb with almost 200 altitude metres. You cycle through beautiful scenery with stunning views of the Geul valley, the eastern Ardennes and the northern Eifel. The beauty of the landscape cannot be captured well in photos's. Camerig-West is quite a tough climb, but steady and stays under 10％ everywhere. Having reached the top, you can continue straight down Pannisberg towards Vijlen. Beautiful scenery here too! On top, you can also turn right onto the Zevenwegenweg towards the Epenerbaan leading to Vaals. As far as I'm concerned, Camerig is the most beautiful climb in the Benelux, with nice hairpin bends and a perfect road surface. Outside the high season, there is not so much traffic. There are plenty of restaurants in the area to take a break.
Lekkere lange klim met bijna 200 hoogtemeters. Je fietst door prachtig landschap met schitterende vergezichten over het Geuldal, de oostelijke Ardennen en het noorden van de Eifel. De schoonheid van het landschap is niet goed in foto's te vangen. Camerig-West is best een pittige klim, maar gelijkmatig en blijft overal onder de 10％. Het eerste deel tot Buitenlust is het zwaarste gedeelte. Daar linksaf staan. Als je helemaal boven bent gekomen in het Vijlenerbos, kun je rechtdoor de Pannisberg af richting Vijlen. Ook hier een prachtig decor! Je kunt bovenop ook rechts de Zevenwegenweg op richting de Epenerbaan die naar Vaals leidt. Wat mij betreft is Camerig de mooiste beklimming van de Benelux, met leuke haarspeldbochten en een perfect wegdek. Buiten het hoogseizoen is er niet zoveel verkeer. Er zijn in de omgeving genoeg restaurantjes om even bij te komen.
As training for Vosges I cycled 4x today. Normally I can do it, but after 4x, with warmth and a moderate spring, I had to give up.
This side is really preferable to the variant on the right. Besides the fact that there is a descent in it, also less beautiful hairpin bends.

Vandaag als training voor Vogezen nog maar eens 4x opgefietst. Normaal goed te doen, maar na 4x, met warmte en een te matig voorjaar, enorm afzien.
Deze kant heeft voor mij echt de voorkeur op de variant rechtsom. Naast het feit dat daar een afdaling in zit , ook minder fraaie haarspeldbochten.
Vergeet bij Buitenlust niet over je schouder te kijken!

Wat regelmatiger dan de kant die doorloopt bij het eerste kruispunt. Hier krijg je na het eerste vlakke stuk nog een paar haarspeldbochten cadeau, vervolgens vlakt de klim af en sla je rechtsaf richting de top.
The nicest side of the Camerig, with those short hairpin turns and then the possibility to ram uphill on the big slab.

Beautiful climb. I was not sure whether this climb is lighter than the "normal" Camerig where after Buitenlust there is a short descent so you can relax but then the steepness really comes back. The climb via the Groenenweg is different: Up to Buitenlust it is just very steep with a km of almost continuous 7-8％. At Buitenlust the pedalling was supposed to be lighter and then the 7％ would come back, but I didn't have that feeling (would pedalling lighter be so efficient?). At the hairpins I went up 2 gears and kept on pedalling. The climb here is quite a nice runner. The road then descends and it is tempting to go straight on, but you will have to go right to finish the climb, and there you encounter a short but dirty slope which makes the acidity bubble up in your tired legs. After that it gets lighter although after the merge with the "normale" Camerig there is one more slope.
Lighter than the Camerig? Yes, it is. The other is quite irregular in the second part where you just keep on pedalling via the Groenenweg. But both are very beautiful.
By the way, I rode this one just like the Camerig in the evening. On Friday evening 1900 I met 0 (zero) cyclists during the whole climb (yes on terraces and benches ;-)). Delightful.
Prachtige klim. Ik was er nog niet uit of deze nu echt lichter is dan de "normale" Camerig waar na Buitenlust even een afdaling is zodat je kunt ontspannen maar waar daarna de steilheid weer echt terug komt. De klim via de Groenenweg is anders: Tot aan Buitenlust is het gewoon heel pittig met een km aan vrijwel continue 7-8％. Bij Buitenlust even lichter en daarna zou de 7％ weer terugkomen maar dat gevoel had ik niet (zou het even lichter trappen zoveel rendement hebben?). Bij de hairpins kom ik 2 versnellingen omhoog en lekker doortrappen. De klim is hier dan ook best een lekkere loper. De weg gaat daarna dalen en het is verleidelijk om rechtdoor te gaan maar je zal toch naar rechts moeten om de klim af te maken, en daar kom je een kort maar vies hellinkje tegen wat het zuur wel even doet opborrelen in je vermoeide benen. Daarna wordt het lichter al kom je na de samenvoeging met de "normale" Camerig nog één keer een helling tegen.
Lichter dan de Camerig? Toch wel. De ander is behoorlijk onregelmatig in het tweede deel waar je via de Groenenweg gewoon lekker doortrapt. Maar beide zijn gewoon zeer fraai.
Overigens deze net zoals de Camerig in de avond gereden. Op vrijdagavond 1900 kwam ik gedurende de hele klim 0 (nul) fietsers tegen (ja op terrasjes en bankjes ;-)). Heerlijk.
Cycling in the hills of Limburg? Then you should not miss the Camerig. The environment is fantastic. Until the junction at Buitenlust restaurant it is downright spicy. The sequel through the woods with some hairpin turns is almost automatic. With "good legs" you can speed up that part considerably. One of my favourite climbs in the south of Limburg.
Fietsen in de Limburgse heuvels!? Dan mag je de Camerig niet missen. De omgeving is fantastisch. Tot de splitsing bij restaurant Buitenlust ronduit pittig. Het vervolg door het bos met enkele haarspeldbochten loopt haast vanzelf. Met "goede benen" kan je op dat stuk het tempo flink opschroeven. Een van mijn favoriete beklimmingen in Zuid-Limburg.
I think this is the nicer version of Camerig. Left at the exit and then 3 hairpins feels like a real climb. The weird thing is you can upshift as the climb progresses because it gets less steep, even in the last two hairpins. Right over the Zevenwegenweg before the real top is nice, but straight on over the Groeneweg towards Vijlen is also advisable.
Ik vind dit de leukere versie van Camerig. Links bij de afslag en dan 3 haarspeldbochten voelt als een echte klim. Het rare is je kan opschakelen naar mate de klim vordert omdat hij minder steil wordt, zelfs in de laatste twee haarspeldbochten. Rechts over de Zevenwegenweg voor de echte top is leuk, maar rechtdoor over de Groeneweg richting Vijlen is ook aan te raden.
This variant is also great and a lot quieter in a beautiful setting with a few delicious hairpins. The only thing is that you don't get a moment of rest on the way, like on the variation outside, and you have to keep your cadence until the top.
Ook deze variant is geweldig en een stuk rustiger in een prachtig decor met een paar heerlijke haarspeldbochten. Alleen krijg je hier geen rustmomentje onderweg, zoals op de variant buitenom, en moet je tot op de top je cadans vast weten te houden.
For me this is the most beautiful combination of the Camerig. Turning left at Buitenlust takes you through a beautiful forest with nice curves. This part is also quieter in terms of traffic.
Voor mij is dit de mooiste combinatie van de Camerig. Links afslaan bij Buitenlust voert je namelijk door een heel mooi bos met mooie bochten. Dit stuk is ook wat rustiger qua verkeer.

En dan boven kun je weer op de andere route komen van de Camerig.
The Camerig; longest climb in the Netherlands, perhaps the only real climb in our country. It's always nice and when you leave Epen and pass by the Smidtse, all the people at a terrace know what's in store for you. After the fruit stand the road immediately goes up, wide and surrounded by trees without giving away that you have to keep pedalling. A turn to the right and you feel the rise, then a real s-curve to the left, lined with stones and with an unobstructed view of the whole valley. It seems as if you are in the Alps. Still on the pedals along the campsite because these are the steepest parts. If you come to the flattening part you can go straight on but now we go into the forest.
It's a nice change of pace and with the winding road in front of us it's a very different experience for the eyes.
By the way, the MTB track on and around the mountain is fantastic to do as a change. Pay attention that you turn right otherwise you will not reach the top. You cross the road that comes up on the outside and then it is a bit false flat to the parking lot at the Rugweg. This is also the Strava measuring point for a nice and long segment.
De Camerig; langste klim van Nederland, misschien de enige echte "beklimming" in ons landje. Altijd lekker en als je Epen uitgaat en langs de Smidtse komt weten alle terrasgangers wat jou te wachten staat. Na het fruitstalletje gaat de weg meteen stevig op, breed en omzoomd door bomen zonder te verraden dat je moet bljjven trappen. Een draai naar rechts en je voelt de stijging, dan een heuse s-bocht naar links, met stenen afgezet en vrij uitzicht op de hele vallei. Het lijkt wel of je in de Alpen bent. Nog even op de trappers langs de Camping want dit zijn de steilste stroken. Als je op het afvlakkende deel komt kun je rechtdoor maar we gaan nu het bos in.
Lekker doortrappen en met de slingerende weg voor ons weer een heel andere ervaring voor de ogen.
Overigens is het MTB parcours op en rond de berg fantastisch om te doen als afwisseling. Goed opletten dat je naar rechts afslaat anders kom je niet boven. Je kruist de weg die aan de buitenkant naar boven komt en dan is het een stukje vals plat tot aan de parking bij de Rugweg. Daar ligt ook het Strava meetpunt van een mooi en lang segment.
