A beautiful climb in the middle of beautiful countryside (cows, sheep, forests, meadows) and very quiet because there are hardly any cars. A picture-postcard ride, but one that nevertheless requires a good level of fitness.
Une très belle montée au milieu d’une belle nature ( vaches, moutons , forêts , prairies ) et très tranquille car quasiment pas de voitures. Une carte postale mais qui demande malgré tout une bonne condition physique.
The route is shared with the Col d'Aspin as far as Payolle ...after the straight after the Adour, the ascent begins with an initial 6km ramp through enchanting scenery to the Cabanes de Camoudiet, between 5 and 8％. A short descent to the Ruisseau de l'Artigou,and its magnificent renovated bridge (see photos) then another 3km to around 6％ in an area that is totally clear and so pleasing to the eye! Superb!

Une courte descente vers le ruisseau de l'Artigou,et son magnifique pont rénové (voir photos) puis encore 3km à environ 6％ dans un espace totalement dégagé et tellement agréable à l'œil ! Superbe !
One of the very best cols. Quiet route with manageable slopes amid cows, sheep and horses with views of many heights. We did it from a campsite right at the start of the climb in Payolle.
Een van de allermooiste cols. Rustige route met behapbare hellingen temidden van de koeien, schapen en paarden met uitzicht op veel hoogs. Wij deden hem vanaf een camping precies aan het begin van de klim in Payolle.
Cycled these in a round trip with the Aspin (from Arreau), really recommended. The surroundings are really fantastic. Like a park with a well-paved and quiet road through it. Definitely don't skip this one!!!
Deze gefietst in een rondje met de Aspin (vanuit Arreau), echt een aanrader. De omgeving is werkelijk fantastisch. Als een park met een goed geasfalteerde en rustige weg erdoor. Sla deze zeker niet over!!!
At the summit, the view is great, you are surrounded by several high peaks and views of Pic du Midi. The climb through the alpine meadow is fun, but on a hot day no shade moments on the steep sections.
Op de top is het uitzicht geweldig, je wordt omringd door diverse hoge toppen en zicht op Pic du Midi. De beklimming door de alpenweide is leuk, maar op een hete dag geen schaduw momenten op de steile stroken.

We did not quite do the first part as we stayed in St Marie de Campan. The first kilometres are the same as the west side of the Aspin. Except for a few short stretches very doable. At the little bridge you turn right and after a stretch of false flat the climb really starts. Before the first peak there seems to be a very tough section but that is optical illusion, just the section towards it has sections of 10％ while the steep road itself is only 4 to 5 per cent for the most part. Along the way you will encounter Donkeys, Horses and Cows. The road is not too wide and not too crowded. If you prefer a gentle climb to a legendary one, this is highly recommended as an alternative to the Aspin.
Het eerste deel hebben we niet helemaal gedaan aangezien we verbleven in St Marie de Campan. De eerste kilometers zijn dezelfde als die van de westzijde van de Aspin. Op enkele korte stukken na zeer goed te doen. Op het bruggetje ga je naar rechts en na een stuk vals plat begint de klim echt. Voor de eerste piek lijkt een heel zwaar stuk te liggen maar dat is optisch bedrog, juist het stuk ernaar toe heeft stukken van 10％ terwijl de steile weg zelf maar 4 a 5 procent is voor het grootste deel. Onderweg kom je Ezels, Paarden en Koeien tegen. De weg is niet al te breed en niet al te druk. Als je een rustige klim verkiest boven een legendarische klim is dit een absolute aanrader als alternatief voor de Aspin.
Cows, donkeys and horses galore! The climb itself is regular, but at 7-9％ kilometers not that easy, as there are - as usual - 10+ stretches. The overall grade is mathematically correct, but obviously "tainted" by the 1 kilometer (7％) downhill. Nice views, especially at the summit.
Despite the bad weather, we enjoyed the climb. Beautiful nature! Ideal in combination with the Aspin as a warm-up.

I did this climb with a friend, from the Payolle lake and then the Aspin climb, to watch the Tour de France go by. There were many spectators and countless camping cars along the route celebrating the passage of the Tour. The slope, which is supposed to be less steep than the Aspin, is in fact more irregular and you have to grit your teeth on some of the steeps. The landscape is sublime, and the shops near Payolle allow you to eat at the foot of the climb.
J'ai fait cette montée avec un ami, depuis le lac de Payolle et à la suite la montée de l'Aspin, pour y voir passer le Tour de France. Beaucoup de spectateurs et d'innombrables camping cars sur les bords de l'itinéraire célébraient le passage du Tour. La pente, supposée moins raide que l'Aspin, est en réalité plus irrégulière et il faut serrer les dents sur quelques raidillons. Le paysage est sublime, les commerces près de Payolle permettent de se restaurer au pied de la montée.
Initially the same route towards Aspin where you turn right at the small plateau of Payolle to start the actual climb. Here you will find the cycling information signs which will keep you informed for the last 10 km. Nice climb through forests where now and then people had a picnic.
After a small descent to cross a mountain stream you end up between open grass-green mountain slopes.
Last kilometers I encountered stray cows, horses, goats, sheep and donkeys on and next to the road.
On the top there is no provisioning possible but you can admire a beautiful 360° nature panorama.
It's a pleasant paradise for cycling, because of the beauty of nature, no inhabitants, hardly any traffic and a lot of animals!
Aanvankelijk gelijklopende aanvangsroute richting Aspin waar je ter hoogte van het kleine plateau van Payolle rechts van afslaat om de eigenlijke klim te beginnen. Hier staan dan ook terug de fiets-infobordjes die je de laatste 10 km. zullen op de hoogte houden. Mooie klim door bossen waar af en toe mensen in alle rust een picknick hielden.
Na een kleine afdaling om een bergbeek over te draaien beland je tussen open grasgroene berghellingen.
Laatste kilometers kwam ik loslopende koeien,paarden,geiten,schapen en ezeltjes tegen op en naast de weg.
Op de top is er geen bevoorrading mogelijk maar wel een prachtig 360° natuurpanorama te bewonderen.
Aangenaam zalig fietsen in "het paradijs" wegens natuurpracht, geen bewoning, amper verkeer en veel diertjes!
A fantastic climb in a ditto environment. Nice to do, not too heavy and with some luck a happy animal mess. You would almost take your bike off the road and go see the animals :-)
Een fantastische klim in een dito omgeving. Leuk om te doen, niet te zwaar en met wat geluk een vrolijke beestenboel. Je zou haast met je fiets van de weg gaan en de beesten opzoeken :-)

Beautiful valley and a nice climb. At the top donkeys, horses and cows await you. The approach to km 14 is along a boring and busy road.
Schitterende vallei en een fijne klim. Boven word je opgewacht door ezeltjes, paarden en koeien. De aanloop tot kilometer 14 loopt langs een saaie, drukke weg.
