Very nice climb. Nowhere very steep climbing percentages, but still a solid effort. And nice views as you look down at the valley and the cliffs behind.
A little past the top, the road is closed with a barrier, even on the map it seems to stop. But by bike, you can definitely pass. You then come to a stunning descent with breathtaking views of the fjord. The asphalt road is closed to car traffic (since the tunnel towards Frafjord was commissioned) and is no longer maintained, moss is already growing here and there, so be careful on the bends, especially in wet weather.
Return is possible via the 3.8km-long tunnel if necessary. There is relatively little traffic and cyclists are allowed, but bike lights and fluorescent clothing are a must.
Heel mooie beklimming.
in January and March 2012 I had the opportunity to climb this remote and scenic route. I started the climb in Dirdal at sea level and took the cycling path following the river to Gilja, where the actual climb starts. The winterly landscape and temperatures made the climb absolutely worthwhile and memorable. Make sure to pass the top and descent on the Frafjord side till at least the first hairpin to be amazed by beautiful views of the Frafjord and its surroundings. There is little to no traffic at all, the tunnel beneath the mountain takes care of that.
