Another one of those tough mountain passes that I climbed recently, just over a month ago. That wasn't the weather forecast, but the truth is that I was hit by heavy rain as I approached Benitatxell from Xàbia. Arriving at the Mercadona where the climb starts, at least it wasn't raining, but I expected that it would be very difficult to make the climb in good conditions with the asphalt so wet.

To my surprise it wasn't like that, only the first straight of about 500 metres to 15% with the water pouring down was very hard and had to be done sitting down, but once this hurdle was overcome, the slope was generally smoother, even with about 200 metres completely flat halfway up the climb.

The start of the climb is not particularly beautiful as it is framed within a housing estate, but it does make it different, and from there we started to have some very interesting views.

Just after turning left at a crossroads after 3km, we reached the viewpoint of Puig de la Llorença, from where there are some spectacular views, which of course I left for the descent :D From the top what can I say, although it was a shame that it was a rainy and overcast day, even so the views were amazing of the whole beach just a stone's throw away at about 400m above sea level, as well as the Peñon de Ifach.

This is definitely a pass that I will try to do again, but on a good weather date that allows me to enjoy both the climb and the views!

The climb is extremely steep at the start. For me, a heavier rider, I was at the limit of the torque I could produce. Luckily, there are two little driveways on the very steepest part where you can turn off to get a seconds respite before attacking the hill again. For me, that was enough to conquer the hardest part. After that it is steep but tops out at 12-13% and is quite doable. Be sure to stop, either on the way up or down at the last hairpin bend. The views to the ocean from there are breathtaking. The view from the top is amazing but have your jacket ready, it is windy at the top.
There was construction on the road (11/23) but there was a good detour around it. The road surface was excellent and the traffic was very light.
If you are in the area, this climb is a must do.

Spicy climb with serious percentages both in the beginning and towards the end!
Some recovery sections in between, though, albeit also with reasonable percentages....

Really recommended, partly because of the Vuelta history, but especially because of the sporting challenge. The climb starts with a wall you face and have to climb. Don't hesitate to use the smallest gears for the first half kilometre. After the first bend, something of relief already comes. The climb remains tough, but softens and even has two short flat stretches; you can definitely gear up. Further up the climb are a few steep longer sections and the wind can also play a role. Pay close attention when following the route: keep left at roundabouts and at the point where you should turn left for the last kilometre. Arriving at the top, you will be rewarded with beautiful views over the sea and the coastal strip.

Vicious thing, especially in the beginning you can quickly catch your breath. Lots of construction here, only at the summit is quiet

Recommended for anyone who likes a challenge. The percentage quickly rises. There is not much recuperation, so go for the top!

The climb where Dumoulin left all the big ones behind for the first time. The climb starts after the shopping centre on the busy main road. From here, a wall immediately looms in front of you where you have to climb against the 16% for 400 meters. After this you can catch your breath a little more and after a short descent the next steep section starts towards the Cumbre del Sol holiday complex, where you take the second exit off the roundabout and then after a few hundred metres take the second turning back towards the weather station on top. In the last part there are still a few steep sections but the view at the top makes up for everything.
