Col du Tourmalet
Long, challenging climb with great appeal, but characterized by a very steady gradient. Once you find your rhythm, you are able to proceed steadily and the climb becomes particularly enjoyable.
I tackled it on an overcast day in early June and the temperatures were quite low. If the weather is not favorable, especially at altitude, you can find it very cold even in the middle of the season.
Gorgeous asphalt all along the ascent.

L’ho affrontata in una giornata nuvolosa di inizio giugno e le temperature erano piuttosto basse. Se il meteo non è favorevole, soprattutto in quota, si può trovare molto freddo anche in piena stagione.

If you are staying near Argeles Gazost definitely go climb this one. An iconic climb, long and in some parts quite difficult. Asphalt quality is fine, the last few kilometers before the top are tight and a little less. Can also be quite windy at the top and if you have it against you, it is quite annoying. Climbed 2 times, and once I met a lot of animals on the way, from sheep to cows. So be careful when you go down.
Als je in de buurt van Argeles Gazost verblijft ga deze dan zeker beklimmen. Een iconische beklimming, lang en op sommige stukken ook vrij lastig. Asfalt kwaliteit is prima, de laatste kilomters voor de top wel krap en iets minder. Kan bovenin ook best veel wind staan en als je die dan tegen hebt is dat best vervelend. 2 keer beklommen, waarbij ik 1 keer de nodige beesten onderweg tegen kwam, van schapen tot koeien. Dus oppassen als je naar beneden gaat.

Rode in June of 2025. Third year of riding portions of that years Tour de France for a benefit funding research for Multiple Sclerosis. The usual road repairs prior to the Tour with few short detours still light traffic and very accommodating drivers. Spectacular ride, about a six on my sixtyeight years pain scale. * my calves are bigger

Nice climb and fortunately, due to a bike day, did not have to share the road with cars and motorbikes. Unfortunately the last 10 km very foggy. Only got some views at the summit. Also nice descent towards the east. Highly recommended

Cycled from the campsite to the summit of the Tourmalet in 2024. The start is not so tough and a little less scenic, but the further up the col the more beautiful the views. The last kilometre is tough, but the reward at the top makes it worth it
In 2024 vanaf de camping naar de top van de Tourmalet gefietst. Het begin is nog niet zo zwaar en wat minder mooi, maar hoe verder op de col hoe mooier de vergezichten. De laatste kilometer is zwaar, maar de beloning aan de top maakt het waard
It's obviously a mythical climb that can't be missed. From my point of view, the first 8 kilometres (the foot of the pass) aren't very interesting and don't offer much, but the rest is a succession of landscapes, each more grandiose than the last. At the summit you'll find something to eat and recharge your batteries!
Il s'agit évidemment d'une ascension mythique et incontournable. De mon point de vue les 8 premiers kilomètres (le pied de col) n'ont pas grand intérêt et n'offrent pas grand chose, par contre la suite est une succession de paysages plus grandioses les uns que les autres. Au sommet vous trouverez de quoi vous restaurer et recharger un peu les batteries !
Nice climb, lovely among the mountains. It was not particularly busy, both in terms of cyclists and motorised traffic. Tried to pace slightly because of the last steep section. But actually it's very even. Came up fitfully.

Fantastic epic climb, must have done!!! The scenery gets rougher as you go. The last few kilometres are leaden after you've already covered so many altimeters!

For years I wanted to climb this mountain one day. And perhaps that's why I had far too high expectations of it :-). The climb was fun, definitely recommended if you have the time. But it is really not the most beautiful climb in the region. So if you have few days available, ride other mountains (Tentes, Aubisque, Spandelles, Luz Ardiden).
The descent (towards Luz), that's a different matter. Good tarmac, large stretches with few/faint bends and good overview. In short: safe acceleration!
Al jaren wilde ik deze berg eens beklimmen. En wellicht heb ik er daardoor veel te hoge verwachtingen van gehad :-). De klim was leuk, zeker een aanrader als je de tijd hebt. Maar het is écht niet de mooiste klim in de regio. Dus heb je weinig dagen tot je beschikking, rijd dan vooral andere bergen (Tentes, Aubisque, Spandelles, Luz Ardiden).
De afdaling (richting Luz), dat is een ander pak mouwen. Goed asfalt, grote stukken met weinig / flauwe bochten en goed overzicht. Kortom: veilig gas geven!
The scenery after Barèges is truly magnificent. But the density of car and motorbike traffic spoils the fun. The climb is long and steady. You need to be patient. And you need to keep your pedal to the metal at the end, which I found to be even steeper because of the altitude.

If you're in the area a bucket list climb. As so many say, the devil is in the tail! You can feel those +10％ then. At the top, even in summer with clouds, it can be quite cold!

Tourmalet is the Tour for me. After you let go of the habitation, there is the tranquillity: a long, pleasant road winding to the convex summit. Then looking back at the road travelled. Enjoyed every metre, no matter how tough the slot was. The descent on the other side is truly a delight!
Tourmalet is de Tour voor mij. Nadat je de bewoning loslaat, is er de rust: een lange, prettige weg die slingerend naar de bolle top gaat. Dan terugkijken naar de afgelegde weg. Genoten van elke meter, hoe zwaar het slot ook was. De afdaling aan andere zijde is werkelijk waar een genot!

Super climb. With open weather done views fantastic up to 2800m point. Was passed after about 8 km at more than double speed by Remco who was there in preparation for the Spanish Tour. Fairly even climb

The pass is very nice, with beautiful scenery and some difficulty at the top when you pass 2000m. However, there are a lot of cars all the way up, which can spoil the climb.

A busy col. Heavy, but never inhumanly steep (except for the last kilometre, but you do that on willpower). Beautiful, but certainly not the prettiest from the valley. But it is a classic, so if you are in the Luz valley, it would be a shame not to try it.
Een drukke col. Zwaar, maar nooit onmenselijk steil (behalve de laatste kilometer, maar die doe je wel op wilskracht). Mooi, maar zeker niet de mooiste uit de vallei. Maar het is een klassieker, dus als je in de vallei van Luz bent, zou het zonde zijn om hem niet te proberen.
I cycled this end after I cycled up Luz Ardiden, which had a deserted summit. The Tourmalet from this end has the better views - in my opinion - but the blistering sun can be a menace as almost all of it is wide open. The Giant is positioned much better now, with a spectacular backdrop for your selfies - if the sun is out...
Absolutely stunning if you get good weather and it is clear at the top. The route from Luz is really varied in scenery and keeps you interested the whole way up. My absolutely favourite climb to date.
On 7 September 2023, I cycled up the Col de Tourmalet with Monique. The day before the Vuelta goes up the Tourmalet. A nice climb from the village of Luz-Saint-Sauveur. The beginning of the climb was doable. I found a section just before the village of Bareges quite tough and after the village there was also a tough section. I took it easy there otherwise you have nothing left for the last part of the climb. Many campers were already lining the road to watch the next day's stage in the Vuelta to the Tourmalet. We filled our water bottles at Super Bareges for the last 5 kilometres. In which the last kilometre just before the summit was the toughest. My counter did read 13％ and you can almost touch the summit already. The summit reached and that gives me great satisfaction.
Op 7 september 2023 ben ik samen met Monique de Col de Tourmalet op gefietst. De dag voordat de Vuelta de Tourmalet omhoog gaat. Een mooie klim van het dorp Luz-Saint-Sauveur. Het begin van de klim was goed te doen. Ik vond een stuk net voor het dorpje Bareges behoorlijk pittig en na het dorpje was er ook een zwaar stuk. Ik heb daar rustig aan gedaan anders heb je niets over voor het laatste deel van de klim. Er stonden al veel campers langs de weg om de volgende dag naar de etappe in de Vuelta naar de Tourmalet te kijken. We hebben bij Super Bareges onze bidons gevuld voor de laatste 5 kilometer. Waarbij de laatste kilometer net voor de top het zwaarst was. Mijn teller gaf wel 13％ aan en je kunt de top al bijna aanraken. De top bereikt en dat geeft mij veel voldoening.
It is a busy climb but long fairly wide and with good tarmac so you are not bothered by traffic while climbing. From Luz, it gets steep right away and doesn't really stop until the top. I found the last kilometre especially tough. I did like the views especially in the last part. And because of the history of the climb, it is one not to be missed in my opinion.
Het is een drukke klim maar wel lang vrij breed en met goed asfalt waardoor je tijdens het klimmen geen last hebt van het verkeer. Vanuit Luz wordt het meteen steil en dat houdt eigenlijk niet meer op tot aan de top. Vooral de laatste kilometer vond ik erg zwaar. Het uitzicht zeker in het laatste deel vond ik wel erg mooi. En vanwege de historie van de klim is het er een die je in mijn ogen niet mag missen.
The Tourmalet from Luz is not my favourite side to climb the Tourmalet. This side is quite bare compared to the side from Campan. Especially in the summer heat, it is nice to be a bit more sheltered among the greenery. Nevertheless, it remains an iconic climb that should definitely not be missed on the cycling tourist's climbing list!
De Tourmalet vanuit Luz is niet mijn favoriete kant om de Tourmalet te beklimmen. Deze zijde is vrij kaal in vergelijking met de kant vanuit Campan. Vooral in de zomerse hitte is het fijn om wat meer beschut te zitten tussen het groen. Desalniettemin blijft het een iconische klim die zeker niet mag ontbreken op het klimlijstje van de wielertoerist!

L énorme traffic motorisé en tout genre en plus de celui des cyclistes fait que cela enlève énormément de charme.
Pour en revenir au col en lui même, il est très régulier sans réelle difficultés si ce n'est la longueur.
Je trouve son statue de col mythique exagéré.
Perso je préfère nos cols Pyrénées tel que la pierre saint Martin, issabe et le soudet ou encore celui de labays qui est difne d un décors cinématographique. Et il y a encore les cols basques....

My very first col outside of category ever. I had no idea what was in store for me. I can still vividly imagine the kick at arrival. The climb itself is not the most beautiful. There are many more beautiful ones in the Pyrenees. There is a lot of traffic because.... everyone wants to be there. At the time, that was not a problem, although now I prefer the low-traffic, unknown cols. The Pyrenees.... A true cycling paradise, there is little traffic because, sparsely populated, few through roads, less known to the general public and an abundance of unknown but no less tough climbs.
Mijn allereerste col buiten categorie ooit. Ik had geen flauw idee van wat mij te wachten stond. Die kick bij aankomst kan ik mij nu nog levendig voorstellen. De klim op zich is niet direct de mooiste. Er zijn veel mooiere in de Pyreneeën. Er is nogal wat verkeer want.... iedereen wil er geweest zijn. Was op dat ogenblik geen probleem, al heb ik het nu véél meer voor verkeersarme, onbekende cols. De Pyreneeën.... een waar fietsparadijs, Er is weinig verkeer want, dun bevolkt, weinig doorgaande wegen, iets minder bekend bij het grote publiek en een overvloed aan onbekende maar daarom niet minder pittige beklimmingen.
