It's a nice pass but nothing more.
The huge amount of motorised traffic of all kinds in addition to that of cyclists takes away a lot of the charm.
To come back to the pass itself, it is very regular with no real difficulties except for the length.
I find its mythical status exaggerated.
I prefer our Pyrenean passes such as la pierre saint Martin, issabe and le soudet or even the pass of labays which is like a film set. And then there are the Basque passes....
But if the tour passes through the Tourmalet then ....
My very first col outside of category ever. I had no idea what was in store for me. I can still vividly imagine the kick at arrival. The climb itself is not the most beautiful. There are many more beautiful ones in the Pyrenees. There is a lot of traffic because.... everyone wants to be there. At the time, that was not a problem, although now I prefer the low-traffic, unknown cols. The Pyrenees.... A true cycling paradise, there is little traffic because, sparsely populated, few through roads, less known to the general public and an abundance of unknown but no less tough climbs.
Mijn allereerste col buiten categorie ooit.
