One of my favourite climbs near Grenoble. 4 sections with a rather fizzy start in Narbonne, then we rest a bit after clemencieres and then we attack the serious stuff until sarcenas! A climb with beautiful views, nice hairpins that punctuate the climb. The arrival at Palaquit, facing the sun, is a real reward. Then the final section to reach the col de porte, a little more crowded but still very nice in the forest. A finish with a bar/resto for refreshments/sandwiches and food. From there, if yo... read more

It's a fine climb that starts steeply up to the hamlet of Narbonne, then the gradient drops a little to the Col de Clémencière (fountain at the crossroads with the road to Vence). After a short descent, the route continues on a minor road to Sarcenas and the Col de Palaquit before returning to the main road for 2km to the Col de Porte (fountain at the pass).

A demanding climb. The climb up to Clémencières is tough from the outset, especially the first 3 kilometres, which ease off until the 1st pass. Lots of motorists in a hurry. A short descent before tackling the big climb via Sarcenas, fortunately with little traffic and magnificent scenery. Arrival at the Col de Palaquit means a return to the Col de Porte route, which is a lot smoother.

It is actually two climbs separated by a short descent. City atmosphere and traffic can be quite oppressive until the Clémencières pass, and then much calmer traffic until the Palaquit pass. There are still 2.5 km to go to the Porte pass on a very busy road. Once at the Col de Clémencières, I prefer to turn off towards the Col de Vence (a nice little country road) and continue along the classic route.

From there, if you are hot, you can do the loop by returning to Grenoble via the Col du Coq.
