I'm french and was born in Grenoble (I live in Belgium now) so I know the region like the back of my hand. The climb to the Col de Porte is already fun, long and tough but you can extend it by going to the Chalets de Charmant Som: 6 km more climbing by the highest paved road of the Chartreuse (altitude 1650 m). Do not forget to try the very steep climb to the Fort Saint-Eynard: in the middle of the climb of the col de Porte, just before Le Sappey, turn right towards the Fort, and then you w... read more

Not too busy, the road is wide and fairly rolling. The first part is easy from St Laurent du Pont. The last 8 km are steeper, but it's satisfying to get to the top.

The people of Grenoble told me so much about it!
I'm a bit disappointed.
It's a serious col, but there's nothing magical or absolutely unforgettable about it.
The first part is fairly solid, but less difficult than the Col de Vence via the small road. On the whole, the road is excellent and motorists know it too... There's a lot of traffic when you get out of the office.
The second part takes place in the forest, which gets a bit more colourful this autumn, but you end up getting a bit bored, as it's so monotonous.
At the finish, cafés and restaurants (closed at this time of year) set up at the foot of Chamechaude, the highest peak in the Chartreuse massif.
In my opinion, the Col de Porte is a rolling pass, a pleasant pass, but it lacks much in the way of a landmark pass.

The road is good all the way up the pass, with very few cars overall. The first few hairpin bends are steep, then the gradient eases before a short descent through Clemenciere. The road then rises steadily to Sous Frette and finally Sarcenas. There are a number of beautiful balcony sections offering fine views over the valley.

It was a very good experience for me. I did the Col du Coq and Col de Porte link-up and it was really hard at the end. This pass is long and fairly regular (especially at the end), and that's what makes it so difficult in my opinion. Above all, don't take this pass lightly.

Carried out during the Échappées Iséroises, so no car needed up to the Col de Palanquit. Very good surface.

Not really a nice climb because there are not many panoramic views. Certainly not to underestimate how hard and irregular the first part is. When you reach the top, you suddenly find yourself in the middle of the Chartreuse massif where it's incredible cycling!
