Great climb from Escot (vallee d aspe), starts flat and gets steeper towards the top, mountain gear recommended. You cycle for a large part through / along forest, little view, so focus full on cycling and the kilometre markers. Also on the col itself little view. But satisfaction all the greater. Descent great to Bielle, with beautiful views over the vallee d'Ossau.... read more

Overrated here in my opinion - a climb that takes a lot of effort but rewards you only very moderately in the form of views. With luggage (okay: my fault...) I had to zig-zag to make it at all and take several breaks, even in places that are not made for it. Be very sure that you want to do this to yourself :D The descent, however, was a bit of a grind!

Climbing the Col de Marie Blanque from Escot is well worth the diversions! The Asp valley is set deep in the rock, with views of the sublime, deep-blue Gave d'Asp, and the climb to the pass takes you through a landscape of lush vegetation. It's magnificent!

Technically, the pass is in two parts: the first is very easy and climbs very quickly. The last 4 kilometres, on the other hand, are formidable. The gradient is unbreathable with almost 3,000 metres where the average never drops below 11% (and this percentage is in the best of cases). You have to wait until the last 100 metres to drop below 10% again. We're pretty proud when we get to the top because the suffering is intense, much more so than on the Col d'Aubisque, which is longer!

The descent that follows onto the Bénou plateau is splendid.

From escot the first 3 kilometres are quite rolling along the stream which is pleasant in summer and a little less so in winter.
The other 2 kilometres are between 5 and 7 %.
A first ramp of 10% for about 500m is there to tell you that the fun begins.
We continue on a climb for 3.5 kms between 11 and 13% which comes to warm our thighs. The top of the pass ends with a small ramp of 8 to 9% for about 500m.
After that it descends gently to the plateau du bénou where the horses and cows are free and therefore on the road
Be careful on this crossing and the beginning of the descent with a breathtaking panoramic view of the Ossau valley.
Be careful to have a good gear, not too big otherwise...

Difficult its hard to get into a rhyhm, the lead in from Escot is open at the end of the valley "the easy bit" with the stream to your right but it soon close's in then you will see a post to the right with orange paint on it thats where the climb proper starts soon hitting double figures and not relenting until the last couple of hundred meters, with no real veiws to speak of all the way to the summit. The decent and the plateau are breathtaking though so you are fully rewarded for all your efforts. #horscatcoaching #horscatcoaching @john.olly
