The views are spectacular and it is not a very busy port
Las vistas son espectaculares y no es un puerto muy transitado
From Ste Marie, we leave the road leading to the Tourmalet on the right, and head up the Payolle love with gentle slopes and a few jolts at 8-10％.We catch our breath and at the marble quarry, we're off for 5 km at 7.5 ％. The view is fairly unobstructed, winding through the pine forest with a series of switchbacks. At the top you can see the valley below! Superb in November with the snow!
Depuis Ste Marie ,on laisse à droite la route menant au Tourmalet, et on remonte l'amour de Payolle avec des pentes douces et quelques soubresaut à 8-10％.On reprend son souffle et à hauteur de la carrière de marbre, c'est parti pour 5 km à 7,5 ％. Vue assez dégagée serpentant dans la forêt de pin avec une série de lacets permettant de relancer. Au sommet on aperçois la vallée d'autre en contrebas! Superbe en novembre avec la neige !
1st mountain pass of my cycling life. I didn't have many kilometres in my legs, so I suffered a bit. The steepest part (3km before the summit), I put my feet down and got back on the bike 2km before the summit. Despite that, I had a great experience. The tarmac is perfect. There's plenty of shade, so you don't suffer too much in bright sunshine. Once you reach the pass, you have a magnificent view down the valley to Arreau.
1er col monté de ma vie de cycliste. Pas beaucoup de Km dans les jambes, j'ai un peu souffert. La partie la plus pentu (3km avant le sommet), j'ai mis pieds à terre et remonté sur le vélo 2km avant le sommet. Malgré cela, très bonne exlerience. L'enrobé est parfait. On profite de beaucoup de zones d'ombres, qui permettent de ne pas trop souffrir en cas de gros soleil. Une fois arrivé au col on a une magnifique vu sur la vallée qui descend à Arreau.

Beautiful climb with some local traffic at the beginning. Increasingly beautiful, calmer and steeper. Lots of meadows and beautiful views. Highly recommended. Much nicer than the Peyresourde.
Mooie beklimming waarbij er in het begin nog wel wat lokaal verkeer is. Wordt steeds mooier, rustiger en steiler. Veel weiden en mooie vergezichten. Aanrader. Veel mooier dan de Peyresourde.
Cycled in the Pyrenees for the first time and did the Col d' Aspin. Nice climb, good is doable. Last kilometres are a bit steeper than the start. A nice warm-up for the Tourmalet.
Voor het eerst in de Pyreneeën gefietst en de Col d' Aspin gedaan. Mooie klim, goed is te doen. Laatste kilometers zijn wat steiler dan het begin. Een mooie opwarmer voor de Tourmalet.
The first real Pyrenean climb we did on our holiday. And that was a wise choice. The first 7 kilometres run pretty well with only a few sections that are a bit steeper. Only in the last 5 kilometres does it get really tough but then you do have great views of the pic du midi in good weather. From the top you have fantastic views and the cows complete it.
De eerste echte Pyreneeën klim die wij op onze vakantie gedaan hebben. En dat was een verstandige keuze. De eerste 7 kilometer lopen vrij goed met slechts enkele stukken die wat steiler zijn. Pas in de laatste 5 kilometer wordt het echt lastig maar dan heb je bij goed weer wel een prachtig uitzicht op de pic du midi. Vanaf de top heb je fantastische uitzichten en de koeien maken het helemaal af.

I found the first part irregular. But very doable. It was one of the easiest climbs in the area. You can really accelerate the whole climb.
In the beginning because it is just not steep and later because it is only a few kilometres.
Also a nice col to finish your training.
Ik vond het eerste stuk onregelmatig. Maar wel heel goed te doen. Het was één van de makkelijkste klimmen in de buurt. Je kunt de hele klim lekker gasgeven.
In het begin omdat het gewoon niet steil is en later, omdat het dan nog maar een paar kilometer is.
Ook een mooie col om je training af te werken.
Nice climb, the slightly lesser side of the Aspin, but definitely recommended. The descent to Arreau is the reward! The Aspin is still one of my favourite climbs of the Pyrenees.
Leuke klim, de iets mindere kant wel van de Aspin maar zeker ook een aanrader. De afdaling naar Arreau is hierbij dan de beloning! De Aspin is toch een van mijn favoriete beklimmingen van de Pyreneeën.
I only climbed the pass from Payolle because I had to go through Hourquette d'Ancizan before. It seems to me that one of the signs indicates the wrong percentage, in this case around 10 ％, where there should only be 8. The climb is fairly regular but on a grittier surface than on the other side, on the Arreau side, which offers a very nice 12 km descent. A real billiard table.
Col monté uniquement depuis Payolle car passage par l'Hourquette d'Ancizan avant. Il me semble qu'un des panneaux, au milieu, indique un pourcentage faux, en l'occurrence autour de 10 ％, là où il ne doit y avoir que du 8. Montée assez régulière mais sur un revêtement plus granuleux que sur l'autre versant, côté Arreau, qui offre une très belle descente de 12 km. Un vrai billard.
First half is very easy, slightly steep until the plateau of Payolle on a busy road. The cycling information boards (distance to the top/altitude/percentage gain) are present every kilometer from the start. After cycling past the white quarry of Espiadet, the real climbing starts with the last 5 kilometers at an average of 8％ through hairpin bends between pine forests. The summit, visible from afar, is an open plain between two green ridges with magnificent views over the two valleys. It is also a pastoral zone, which means that animals (especially cows) can roam freely.
Easy and slightly less beautiful side of Tour classic, remains nevertheless the "bike worth"!
Eerste helft is heel simpel licht stijgend tot het plateau van Payolle op een drukke weg. De fietsinfo bordjes (afstand tot de top/hoogte/stijgingspercentage) zijn van bij de start elke kilometer aanwezig. Na het voorbijfietsen van de witte steengroeve van Espiadet begint het echte klimwerk met de laatste 5 kilometer aan gemiddeld 8％ via haarspeldbochten tussen de dennenbossen. Top, van ver te zien, is een open vlakte tussen twee groene heuvelruggen met prachtig zicht over de twee valleien. Tevens "zone pastorale" wat betekent dat dieren (hier vooral koeien) er vrij rondlopen.
Makkelijke en iets minder mooie zijde van Tour klassieker,blijft desondanks de "fiets moeite" waard!
Until Payolle a runner. Then the serious work begins. Not a very nice climb. The other side of the Aspin from Arreau is much nicer. Rather cycle via Ancizan in the direction of Arreau.
Tot Payolle een loper. Daarna begint het serieuze werk. Geen bijster mooie klim. De andere kant van de Aspin vanuit Arreau is vele malen mooier. Fiets liever via Ancizan richting Arreau.
Nice climb that can possibly be done in combination with the Tourmalet. Beware of the cows which can sometimes just walk across the road. The col is not super tough but there are some nasty bits in it, especially during the last kilometers.

Leuke beklimming die men eventueel kan doen in combinatie met de Tourmalet. Oppassen voor de koeien die soms zomaar over de weg lopen. De col is niet superzwaar maar er zitten toch wel enkele venijnige stukjes in, zeker bij de laatste kilometers.
