The beginning is beautiful, climbing through the forest from Lac de la Gileppe. Then you end up on the main road for the rest of the ascent of the Baraque Michel. There the cycling is a lot more boring and the cars're speeding past you all the time. At the top there is not much to see.

Great climb: the first part is enjoyable in the woods and by the lake (especially recommended in hot weather, this provides the necessary cooling). Watch out for the closed barriers, you can pass next to them, but then you have to watch out for gravel and stones. Geweldige beklimming: het eerste deel is genieten in de bossen en aan het meer (vooral een aanrader bij warm weer, dit zorgt voor de nodige verkoeling). Opletten voor de gesloten slagbomen, je kan wel naast de slagbomen door, maar dan moet je opletten voor gravel en stenen. De laatste 5km is wel over de grote baan - het voordeel tov klim ernaast is dat je op een later moment op de grote baan komt, maar het is toch nog 5km te gaan. Al bij al valt dit ook goed mee, goed asfalt en zeer brede baan. Ook ideaal om dit stuk af te dalen. Wegens de schoonheid en de verkoeling van deel 1 toch 5 sterren!
Nice climb though. First part is nicer in terms of landscape, and there is no traffic. There are other cyclists and some horse riders though. The tarmac here is a bit grainy and not too good.
Part two leads along the N68. The good tarmac you get here is also popular with cars and motorbikes. After Michel, you climb on to the roof of Benelux, Signal de Botrange. Here you can use the excellent cycle path.

Mooie klim hoor. Eerste stuk is wel mooier qua landschap, en er is geen verkeer. Wel andere fietsers en wat ruiters. Het asfalt is hier wat korzelig en niet al te best.
Deel twee voert over de N68. Het goede asfalt dat je hier krijgt is ook populair bij auto’s en motoren. Na Michel klim je door naar het dak van de Benelux, Signal de Botrange. Hier kan je gebruikmaken van het uitstekende fietspad.

Climb in two parts where the difference is not in the average gradient. If the first part is a lot more undulating than the runner the second part is. Difference is mainly the character: a nice little forest road (car-free but "noticeably" (still not many by the way) many cyclists) with quite a few bends vs a big connecting road with fast moving car traffic. The first part is pure enjoyment, the second part more of a "must" because you want to get to the top anyway. However, even in the second part the scenery makes up for a lot.

If you combine this splendid climb to the Barraque Michel with the vicious climb a few km back at the dam (les Lacets...) or the road from Henseberg, you have one of the jewels of the Ardennes. Not difficult, except for its length, but very beautiful. The few km to the top on a busy N road you take for granted. On top, coffee and rice cake.

Je fietst er vervolgens over een verhard pad aan de oostkant onder de bomen door helemaal langs. Let wel op want er kunnen soms wat stenen en of takken liggen die bij flinke regenbuien naar beneden zijn komen spoelen.
Als je uiteindelijk bij het riviertje La Gileppe bent, begint het eigenlijke klimmen met een procentje of 5 gemiddeld tot aan de hoofdweg. Eenmaal daar aangekomen draai je naar rechts en dan is het nog een paar kilometer 'vals plat' doortrekken naar de Baraque Michel. Hier rijdt veel verkeer, maar de weg is gelukkig breed. Maak de klim af door naar het hoogste punt van Belgie te fietsen (Signal de Botrange). Vanaf daar kun je mooi via Ovifat en het volgende stuwmeer bij Robertville naar Malmedy en Stavelot afzakken, alwaar de keuze aan andere mooie beklimmingen groot is (bijv. Stockeu, Rosier, Haute Levee etc)

Echt een mooie klim richting het hoogste punt van België. Het begin (eerste 5 à 6 kilometer) is autovrij door de bossen bij Lac de la Gileppe, prachtig. Hier is de klim niet geleidelijk en het wegdek niet super goed maar wel gewoon goed te doen. Op een gegeven moment rijd je de N68 op en klim je nog rustig verder, ofja rustig qua stijgingspercentage. Hier is het wegdek super maar er rijden wel veel auto's. Gelukkig is er voldoende ruimte voor ze om in te halen. Al met al een echte aanrader als je een keer lekker lang wil klimmen!

Ideal climb if you start from the lake of Gileppe. Much calmer variant of the Baraque Michel. Halfway it merges with the original climb. From there on, you have the busier traffic again. Until here it is a traffic free climb. You have to pass a barrier and you can enjoy a quiet climb between the trees. It is shorter and on average steeper than the original climb but oh so much more beautiful!
Ideale klim als je vertrekt vanuit het meer van Gileppe. Veel rustigere variant van de Baraque Michel. Halverwege voegt deze zich samen met de originele klim. Vandaar af heb je dus ook weer het drukkere verkeer. Tot hier is het een verkeersvrije klim. Je moet langs een slagboom en je kan heerlijk rustig klimmen tussen de bomen. Hij is korter en gemiddeld gezien dus ook steiler dan de originele klim maar ó zoveel mooier!
