Nice climb through narrow valley. Climb actually starts already in Arenas; up to Poncebos it still undulates a bit. I think the steepest section is just before Sotres, not after. Watch out for cows on the road when descending. If you cycle a round trip from Panes, we recommend riding back via Arangas. Nice undulating climb and beautiful distant views.... read more

Climbs gradually through the scenic valley along the river. Once you are past the furnicular entrance abd the Ruta de Cares hiking car pats then there is almost no traffic. The climb steepens quite rapidly for the last couple of kms into Sotres. Once in Sotres you can continue up to the La vuelta monument which involves a steep but short climb to an abandoned village where the monument is located.

This climb also goes through the beautiful picos de Europa. Truly wonderful. Indeed beyond the village, dd hardest kilometres are about's 3 km below the summit. For the real enthusiast.

This climb has everything, it is challenging and you cycle in an amazingly beautiful setting. Be sure to include the descent to Tresviso, this is worth the effort, because it provides unique pictures.

Impressive climb in the Asturias and maybe the most beautiful area in Spain for those who love the pure nature.
Most of the climb up to Sotres is a nice good tarmac road with moderate traffic but 3 km before the end the misery starts with sections of more than 15% and even more than 20%. Also the road surface is very bad here but without problems still passable with a road bike but you have to see where you cycle because of pieces and pits in the road surface.
In 2015 this climb was on the programme of the Vuelta for the first time and no one less than pocket climber and mountain goat Joachim Rodriguez won it. Rodriguez was a rider who loved the hugely steep climbs but preferably not for too long because his bike capacity was relatively limited.

We had booked a hotel in Sotres and it turned out we were halfway this climb. Sotres is situated in the Spanish nature reserve Picos de Europa, in one word fabulously beautiful. During a walk from the hotel it went steep up until we came to a monument, which showed that the 15th stage of the Vuelta 2015 had ended here. A victory for Purito and a big loss of time for our Tom. If the organization of the Vuelta found this goat trail, it was quite an adventure to ride it ourselves. Goat trail might be too denigrating, the first part is good tarmac but the last two kilometers are deadly steep (up to 16%) and a crumbling road surface. Continue for 12 km to Treviso where the road ends. Breathtaking views of the Picos.
