What a magnificent climb this is! Valle Nevado is probably the most famous and largest ski resort in South America, but in Chilean spring, summer and autumn it is beautiful cycling. The climb is easily accessible from the centre of Santiago. Calculated from the city centre, it is already 20 kilometres slightly uphill. When you reach the end of the city, the official start of the climb begins. At the foot of the climb is another petrol station that also caters to cyclists, with plenty of choice of bars and sports drinks and even benches to sit on. It is not unwise to stock up on plenty of provisions, as the climb is endless: over 45 kilometres. Along the way, you will come across two more food and drink points, but they are not always open outside the weekend. There also seems to be a water fountain along the way, to refill the water bottle, but I did not spot it along the way.

The climb itself is beautiful. The first kilometres the percentages are still somewhat moderate and you ride through the valley without too many turns. When you get to the first hairpins of the climb, the character of the climb also changes. From here, the percentages increase and one hairpin after another follows. This climb has so many hairpins that even the Stelvio would be jealous of it.

Just before reaching Farellones, at turn number 40 (yes, every hairpin has its own number), there is a fork. From here, the character of the climb changes again. The vegetation has all but disappeared here and you drive through a rocky landscape. The road even seems to have widened at this altitude. The wind also plays a bigger role here. After another whole series of beautiful hairpin bends, you finally reach the summit. This is unfortunately a typical ski resort, yet the views are phenomenal.

The heaviness of the climb is mainly in its length. Although much of the climb has solid percentages, it never gets really super steep. Luckily, 45 kilometres of serious climbing is more than enough. Chances are you will meet fellow cyclists along the way, even outside the weekend; the climb is very popular with the Chilean cycling community.
