Pretty scenic climb, looks more difficult than it actually is (if you have some training). The road has a toll for cars and therefore the traffic is limited, although it leads to Laghi di Cancano which is a popular destination and there are shuttle buses going back and forth. Once you reach the old towers you can go ahead to the lakes themselves, a very beautiful area to see and enjoy after the climb and before descending. There are more roads around the lakes but they are gravel roads.

The Italian version of the French 'Lacets de Montvernier'. Climb you see looming from afar and does inspire some fear, but once you climb you notice dst the climb runs wonderfully and you look forward to the next bend every time. At the top, of course, there are beautiful and iconic views. Too bad the climb is a dead-end so after marvelling at the view you get to descend the same winding road again.

Nice climb with all the curves and not too steep. Therefore excellent warm-up for the Stelvio, for example.

Another beautiful climb offered by the Valtellina.
Many hairpin bends that make you breathe and an even gradient. The arrival at the top is rewarded by the view of the Cancano lakes.

Un'altra bellissima salita offerta dalla Valtellina.

Rode this climb in the rain which somewhat spoiled the views. But the road surface is pretty good with some super smooth new stretches. The climb also has signs indicating the hairpin numbers and the kms to go.
Traffic wise it is a more quiet climb, and due to the many hairpins you'll feel on your own most of the time.
If you're in the area you can consider it, but with the Stelvio, umbrail, gavia etc around this shouldn't be on the top of your list.
4 stars as its nice, though the big names in the area should be higher on your list.

TOP climb! Gradual with beautiful views. The hairpins are sharp but almost flat, allowing you to really pick up speed.

Arriving at the tunnels, it is slightly downhill to the Torri's with a viewpoint over the climb and the valley.

A little further on (indeed paved) you reach Lago di Cancano, the finish of stage 18 of the Giro 2020. The women's race also recently finished here. That gives another reason to ride on.

This climb also gives the most chance to climb up with the pros. Among others, we met the women of Trek and UAE and the men of Lotto. They prefer to ignore the Stelvio.

TOP klim!

In spite of all the praise, I did not find this a particularly beautiful climb. Maybe it was because of the grey weather at the top?

One of the nicest climbs here (personal opinion of course). Very busy with car traffic today on 24 August. The parking fee does not deter cars from driving to Cancano. The curves are good and reasonably wide here and there.

Loved it. Ideal for a warm-up ride after you arrive in Bormio. The first section is steep-ish but doable. The hairpins are graceful and short (they remind me of Lancets de Montverniers in Savoie, France). The views on the top and throughout are stunning.

Update, last part past the towers (the Torri di Fraele) along the first lake Lago Scale and up to the Rifugio Ristoro Mone Scale overlooking the reservoir Lago di Cancano is now paved with asphalt, I think only recently. Be sure to add more!
The climb is as mentioned in the main description indeed a good climb to warm up for a cycling holiday. The climb is very well indicated with countdown signs in each hairpin bend (there are 21) and signs every few kilometres. The climb is obviously also often used as a test climb for competition riders, according to the many paint markings on the road, including one every few kilometres. And we met Tadej Pogacar and his girlfriend Urska Zigart that day.

Just a nice climb if you are around there, certainly not too hard. In the afternoon indeed little or no shade when the sun is shining. Dead end road, last piece to the lake was unpaved, In any case, continue to cycle to the lake, which is definitely worth it.

Not particularly hard but worth it for the views. Every time I am in the area I do it, completing it with the tour of the lakes or with the descent to Bormio from Boscopiano. A very nice road that connects to the road that descends from Stelvio and that you can take going to the right after the first dam.

Putting some tension on the muscles the day before the Pirata (Golazo's Granfondo Climbing for life). The famous climb to lago di Cancano. You don't have to be a super climber to conquer this mini-Stelvio. It is enjoyable from the first to the last metre partly because of the beautiful view of the Bormio 2000 and 3000 ski station. A little past the towers, the beautiful asphalt turns into gravel. Cycling in the mountains is not just climbing and suffering. It is also and above all enjoyment. Proven once again here.

Nice warming-up for all the other violence that Bormio and its surroundings have to offer. Do not eat too much, all the bends can make you nauseous. View is beautiful and especially just drive up to and including the lake.

I rented a Focus Izalco road bike in Bormio (Spot-On) for €60 and did this climb in July 2021. Very beautiful climb with hairpins to the towers, followed by a flat section along the Lago Scale, towards the Lago di Cancano and Lago di San Giacomo. The course around the Lago di Cancano and Lago di San Giacomo is unpaved, but, if you arrive by road bike, I highly recommend to rent a mountainbike in "Rent a Bike Cancano" (€4 per hour) so you can do the +/- 17 km course around the lakes. If I would have known, I would have rented a mountainbike from the beginning to do the ascent to the Torri di Fraele as well. Beautiful views on the lakes and surrounding mountains! Almost no cars as they have to pay a ticket to drive to the Torri. Not the toughest day on my biking holiday in Bormio but definitely the most beautiful.

Fantastic climb. Mini Stelvio. At the top of the towers, cycle all the way to the reservoir. Here you can go down (unpaved but doable) and over the dam to the other side. Even as a non-photographer, the photos can't fail.

Fantastische klim. Mini Stelvio.

A great climb to start with if you are in Bormio for a few days. The hairpin bends are very nice to the top, the descent is therefore technical. Above is beautiful at the lake, just keep on cycling!

With Bormio as a cycling start, the climbs of the iconic Stelvio and Gavia are an essential.
For this, the ideal warm-up and preparation is the wonderful unknown climb to Torri di Fraele.
The approach is first parallel to the Stelvio and then in turn 3 turn left towards Livigno and after the church of Torri Piano turn right into Via Cancano (signpost Torri di Fraele/lago Cancano).
There the climb starts with the first 4 hairpins and a long stretch of right-hand turns on the valley flank to gain height before the real hairpin festival starts. Within a few kilometres there are then 17 bends leading to 2 short dark tunnels through the rock face, which round off the last 200 metres to the old castle towers on the summit. There you have a fantastic view of the almost complete climb and the valley.
Through unpaved road you can still slightly descend to the Cancano reservoir. Starting point of many MTB possibilities.
Nowhere are there extremely steep parts but there were some loose stones along the sides of the road and there was a herd of mountain goats in the last tunnel.

Fantastic climb in the National Park away from the traffic you ABSOLUTELY have to BIKE!!!!!

The Giro has found this climb in recent years, for both women and men. The climb is very clear and easy to do, with some places to rest. The main point is that this can be a sunny climb with little shelter and therefore very hot, especially in the afternoon. Sufficient drinking is important. Certainly by cycling to the lake, even on the road bike, because this is really a cherry on the cake!

Voldoende drinken is belangrijk.

This was my first serious climb abroad, I didn't know what to expect and I didn't know how long it would take. But the experience I gained by starting too fast and hyperventilating, I benefited from the rest of the week by starting calmer. The view at the top is great.

If you do it for the climb in itself, you can with the racing bike ride up. However, this pearl is ideal to do with the mountain bike, then not only the climb is enjoyable, but also the beautiful views of the crystal clear lake of Cancano. You can ride around it completely in both directions on a very quiet unpaved path (with racing bike not really doable). A round trip around the 2 parts of the lake is about 20km . Along the way you'll also find a super located cyclist terrace where you can have a drink. From this climb alone you can make a beautiful photo book.

August 2019 climbed on a "rest day" between the big giants.Nice climb, no killing and therefore time to enjoy.Road surface is good, provided you cycle through after the top to the reservoir for a beer because then it becomes unpaved, but even that is good to do with a road bike.

I thought this was the best climb of the whole weekend (Mortirolo, Stelvio from both sides and this one). Maybe because it is not too hard and you can really enjoy it. The curves are almost flat in comparison with the Stelvio from Prato. This allows you to speed up in the curves,

Beautiful climb.
Used to let legs get used to it before we start doing the Stelvio etc.
If you're on top, beautiful view of the hairpin bends. Do not forget the bikes to the 2nd large lake. There you can have a cup of coffee and get ready for the nice descent.

Prachtige beklimming.

Did this climb on thursday 7 september right after we arrived in Bormio from the Netherlands (3am). Wonderful ride! Starts in Bormio and after a bit of ascending and descending leaves the road and heads towards Torri di Fraele. Especially the tornanti in the last kilometers are nice to get the climbing going and offer a fantastic view. At the top I quickly changed into something warmer and headed down towards Bormio.

Op donderdag 7 september deze beklimming gedaan direct nadat we vanuit Nederland (3 uur 's nachts vertrokken) aankwamen in Bormio. Prachtige rit!

About Torre di Fraele I can be brief. It is an ABSOLUTE must !!!! Once at the top you can take beautiful pictures of the remains of 2 towers. TIP bike a little further past the top, the road is unpaved but about 1 kilometer further you come to a lake and a little further to a second lake that lies slightly lower. You can even bike over the dam. Breathtakingly beautiful. Torre di Fraele, less known but in my opinion so much nicer and quieter than the Stelvio.

Nice climb on 'ok' road surface. Especially at the end it is a beautiful sight, with all the hairpin bends. Feeling the climb was much more even than the profile suggests. The 11% at the top does not seem right, neither does the 2%. Along the way there is a gate where drivers have to pay 6 euro to get through, but cyclists are allowed to go up for free. The road leads to the lakes of Cancano, but I would have preferred a mtb for the unpaved road.

Mooie klim over 'ok' wegdek.

Vorig jaar in september waren we in Bormio. Absolute aanrader!

Beautiful climb. At one point you see the towers and the winding road leading to them. You know where you are going. The road is good, no holes and here and there some stones but that is not a problem.

Prachtige klim.

It is indeed a beautiful unknown climb. I rode it on 17 June'14 and the road has been upgraded and is no longer a problem.
