The climb starts at the bottom of Mamelis at the roundabout and via the Mamelisserweg you enter Vijlen where you go up steadily towards the church. In the village, a few hups take you higher again and the edge of the village to enter Rugweg. The first part of the Rugweg is not too bad but once you have passed the path to the right to the stations of the cross, it is hard work until just before the P-place of Het Hijgend Hert. After that, it is a nice ride to the Epenerbaan.
De klim start onderin Mamelis op de rotonde en via de Mamelisserweg rij je Vijlen binnen waar je gestaag omhoog gaat richting de kerk. In het dorp een paar hupjes die je weer hoger deel en de rand van het dorp brengen om de Rugweg op te gaan. Het eerste stukje van de Rugweg valt nog mee maar zodra je het pad rechts naar de kruiswegstaties voorbij bent is het tot vlak voor de P-plaats van Het Hijgend Hert toch aanpoten. Daarna is het tot aan de Epenerbaan lekker uitrijden.
Fine, not too difficult runner up the Camerig. Good alternative for the other busier roads to the top.
Fijne, niet al te moeilijke loper de Camerig op. Prima alternatief voor de andere drukkere wegen naar de top.
Nice climb man. Perfect to ride on your strength, not steep enough to really break down and long enough to have to work on your fitness.
Lekker klimmetje man. Perfect om op kracht te rijden, niet steil genoeg om echt kapot te gaan en lang genoeg om je conditie te moeten aanspreken.
The devil is in the beginning between Mamelis and Vijlen. A steep climbing bike path along a wider road and in Vijlen itself some climbs alternated with flat stretches. It seems easy so you want to go up too fast, which will set you back. As soon as you enter the Rugweg it gets better, with in the beginning a nice view to the right. The climb is great and soon you reach the T-junction, turn left and cycle on.
No high gradients so also suitable for cyclists without strong climbing legs.
Het venijn zit in het begin tussen Mamelis en Vijlen. Een pittig klimmend fietspad langs een bredere weg en in Vijlen zelf enkele klimmetjes afgewisseld met vlakke stukken . Het lijkt eenvoudig zodat je hier te hard naar boven wilt, wat dan zal terug slaan. Zodra je de Rugweg ingaat wordt het lekkerder, met in het begin een fraai uitzicht naar rechts. De klim loopt heerlijk en al snel ben je bij de T-splitsing, naar links en ff uitfietsen.
Geen hoge hellingspercentages dus ook zeker geschikt voor fietsers zonder krachtige klimbenen.
From Holset east of Vijlen it's a nice run over a not too busy road through the forest. In combination with the Groeneweg a nice alternative to avoid the traffic on the Epenerbaan.
Vanuit Holset ten oosten van Vijlen is het een heerlijke loper over een niet al te drukke weg door het bos. In combinatie met de Groeneweg een fijn alternatief om de drukte op de Epenerbaan een beetje te ontlopen
The variant from Mechelen starts at about the same altitude, but goes up even more regularly. Top piece of South Limburg, if you turn off the provincial road into the forest look to the right for a beautiful view.
De variant vanuit Mechelen start ongeveer vanaf dezelfde hoogte, maar loopt nog regelmatiger omhoog. Top stukje Zuid-Limburg, als je de provinciale weg afslaat het bos in even naar rechts kijken voor prachtig uitzicht.
I usually come from Mechelen, from afar you can already see the church of Vijlen. The bit to the church is already mean, at the church the pressure is off for a short descent. Here you can also refill your water bottle at a water tap. After that the climb continues. The first part of the back road is not too bad, from the forest on it becomes a bit more of a climb. The road ascends somewhat in stages. At the top it flattens out again.
At the top, between the trees, the road can stay wet a long time in autumn/winter. Even when it has been dry for a few days and the road is fine everywhere, you can still count on wet roads.
Ik kom meestal vanuit Mechelen, van ver zie je dan al de kerk van Vijlen liggen. Het stukje naar de kerk toe loopt al gemeen op, bij de kerk kan de druk even van de benen voor een klein stukje afdaling. Hier kun je ook je bidon bijvullen bij een watertappunt. Daarna blijft het lekker doorklimmen. Het eerste stukje van de echte rugweg valt nog heel er mee, vanaf het bos wordt het wat meer klimmen. Enigszins trapsgewijs loopt de weg op. Bovenop vlakt het weer heel erg af.
Boven tussen de bomen wil de weg in de herft/winter wel erg lang nat blijven liggen. Ook als het al enkele dagen droog is en de weg overal prima is, kun je hier nog wel rekenen op nat wegdek.
I started this climb from a different point, below Vijlen. You then first have a steep path around up to Vijlen. Nice climb through the forest, undulating, and nice views as you cycle out of Vijlen, and before you cycle into the forest.
Ik ben deze klim vanaf een ander punt begonnen, onder Vijlen. Je hebt dan eerst een steil pad om hoog naar Vijlen. Mooie klim door het bos, golvend, en mooie uitzichten wanneer je Vijlen uitfietst, en voor je het bos in fietst.
It's the easiest climb up the vijlenerbos, so I used it during a cycling tour with my little brother who doesn't really like climbing (we had to pass it anyway given the location of our campsite). It's not a moemaker, but it's not something you can go full blast up either. It just goes up gradually on a straight but still authentic road. Through the woods, this climb can be quite fun.
Het is zoals bekend de makkelijkste beklimming het vijlenerbos op, dus ik heb hem gebruikt tijdens een fietsroute met mijn broertje die niet zo van klimmen houdt (we moesten er hoe dan ook overheen gezien de ligging van onze camping). Het is niet een moemaker, maar ook weer niet iets dat je vol omhoog kan knallen. het gaat gewoon geleidelijk omhoog op een rechte maar toch authentieke weg. Door de bossen heen kan deze klim best leuk zijn.
Nice road that climbs gradually. Easiest route up the Camerig. Also great in the descent, you can go down at top speed.
Mooie weg die lekker geleidelijk oploopt. Makkelijkste route de Camerig op. Ook heerlijk in de afdaling, je kunt er op topsnelheid omlaag.
