A pleasant climb, with views over the whole valley from the start.
Note the deteriorating surface, which becomes impassable on a road bike as you approach Gorramendi and its antenna, and the first peaks of the massif. Gorramakil is just a little further on.

At the top of the Otxondo I still felt like riding to higher altitudes. With some hesitation, I continued up this climb without knowing what to expect. Fortunately because it was so beautiful, encouraged by horses and beautiful views, I climbed (and descended) to the top. The road surface was not too good and several times I was on the verge of turning around. Arriving at the summit, nothing awaits you but some radio towers, phenomenal views and wonderful silence.

The first 9km and so the Puerto de Otsondo runs on a beautiful road and is not too bad in terms of percentages and never really steeper than 9%. At the top you turn left to follow the dead end road to the top. The road surface is in some places very good and then suddenly very bad. It goes up and down until about 5km from the summit, where it starts to climb constantly and the tarmac is not very good. The last km, the road surface is so bad and shoddy that it is actually not doable on a road bike, but definitely doable on foot because the view is incredible. Your only company at the top are the horses! Watch out for potholes in the descent and gravel.

The Pico Gorramakil is quite a nice climb and not difficult at all. The beginning is a bit uncertain because with the gate down it looks like you are riding on private property. The first km's don't give you the feeling of a Basque climb because the road goes up but regularly it hardly rises and sometimes it descends. After 7 km, the road climbs steadily at an average of 7% with some double digit climbs and even 15%. At the top, the road becomes a dead end, but the view makes up for this, because on a clear day, you can see very far. Watch out in the descent for four-legged friends who apparently also know this road.
