This route seemed to be the least steep way up Pico do Arieiro. Starting by sea in the centre of Funchal the first ~500m is climbing up through the city with good views. You then leave the city and climb up through eucalyptus trees on a quiet road. The route steepens for the second half. The views from the top are fantastic! I did it (twice) in July on good quality bikes rented in Funchal. Definitely worth starting early as there's not much shade on the top half, and take lots of water.
