Long climb to summer hiking and 'winter ski resort cycled from the south Tyrolean town of Merano.
Wide at times very busy road initially climbs out of the tourist town past hotels and big villa's, before ending up on the sunny southern flank among fields full of grapevines and especially apple trees. The route then dives into the forest with fairly constant spirited percentages and five lighted tunnels (longest 950m).
Just before cycling into Hafling/Avelengo, you leave the busy road via a left turn for the last 4.5 kilometres. On narrow road with much less traffic you meander briskly climbing through the housing of Hafling-Oberdorf, followed via hairpin bends through the coniferous forest punctuated by panoramic views.
End point Falzeben is large (summer empty) car park with modest hotel colony and the necessary catering around the cable car station.
Not too bad. There are uglier ski resorts.

!!! Generally good road surface, only the sides (= bicycle side)
of the tunnel roads sometimes leave something to be desired (pits/grooves) !!!

Tough long regular climb to ski resort which in my opinion (sorry JoostHop) does NOT come close to the Stelvio in terms of difficulty and natural beauty.

The Merano 2000 was close by and looked tough, so together with my son I did it in July 2022. Easiest to find by putting the hamlet "Falzeben" in your GPS. Merano 2000 was a totally unknown name to me and not as imaginative as the Stelvio, which we had cycled a few days before but it is in fact more difficult, with over 15 km and a considerably steeper percentage.
The climb starts when you just enter Merano from Tirolo, and to my surprise there were lots of cars heading in that direction as well. Not only is the Merano 2000 a ski lift/bobsleigh track with restaurants, but also the road continues to other villages. Especially in the beginning very busy with cars. On the way a few dark tunnels (one of over 400 m), so take a rear light with you. The road goes up quite regularly with a steep percentage, in the hamlet Hafling you turn left and the climb becomes even steeper. After a few km of pedalling we reached the top: an insignificant car park full of the cars that had overtaken us on the way and a few restaurants.
