It’s no easy task to bag good ratings and stars for these short climbs, situated so close to the splendid mountain passes in the surrounding area. This climb towards La Thuile isn’t unpleasant at all, but it doesn’t have enough going for it to make it memorable. This climb towards La Thuile isn’t unpleasant at all, but it doesn’t have enough going for it to make it memorable.
You set off from the centre of Bourg-Saint-Maurice and climb for a good while to leave behind the houses, which aren’t exactly the most attractive in the area. You’ve barely left Bourg when you reach Vulmix. It’s quiet. The gradients are fairly reasonable. The views aren’t bad at all, but nothing really catches the eye.
Today (18 June 2026), the lower section of the road was under construction, but cyclists were able to get through without too much trouble. The rest of the tarmac is in fairly good condition.
A nice little climb to tackle quickly when a storm is brewing. For some, it’ll be a good warm-up before tackling the Cormet or the Iseran.

A short but tough climb from Bourg St Maurice, a cycling kingdom.
It's best to do it in the morning when it's cool because it's exposed to the sun first thing in the morning.
There's a lot of traffic up to the village of Vulmix and then it's quiet.
The scenery unfolds as you climb, and at the top it's the apotheosis.

Twisty climb to a sleepy village with a nice little church and water to refresh.
If you continue after La Thuile, the tarmac will go one for another 1-2km and continue to gravel for a long time (till you're at 1700m). it's pretty smooth, doable with a road bike

A pleasant little climb, ideal for getting your legs back in shape after the winter season or for short training sessions. On this sun-drenched slope, the road dries quickly and warms you up or cooks you, depending on the season.
From Bourg to Vulmix the traffic flows smoothly, and from Vulmix to Lathuile the air is no longer diesel-fuelled. Once you arrive in Lathuile, take the road to the left of the charming chapel of St Barthélemy. There is a short kilometre's climb for those with pizza wheels, but for those with gravel wheels, the adventure continues.
The view from the top offers a magnificent panorama of the valley's four ski resorts.
For more, on the way down, when you arrive in Vulmix take the Montgirod/Les Chapelles direction and from there you can follow the sunny side of the valley as far as Valezan and Granier.
