The first kilometre has absolutely nothing to do with fun cycling as far as I am concerned. A busy road with many equivalent crossings where you have to give way and stop all the time. This way, you don't really get into a rhythm at all. Still 2 stars instead of 1 because the last steeper part is quieter. But in my opinion, if that's what you want to do, it's much better to do the variant via the Bosweg, as the last part is the same.... read more

You can make a big mistake here. If you come from Hommelseweg, the start is still pretty quiet but the devil is in the tail, as the saying goes. So too here. So if you don't start at full throttle you should definitely be able to do this one. During the Arnhems Mooiste I saw some people break down here because they didn't know what was coming.

This climb starts in the busy built-up area and then runs along a wide road at first, further on you keep to the right and past some houses you enter a much quieter and greener area. The percentages suddenly rise considerably as well, with much firmer percentages than normal in Arnhem. Enjoy this climb and the variation offers something extra.

The first part in the city can be busy! Shopping street, many cars half on the street/sidewalk. When you get a bit higher on the Hommelseweg, it becomes a bit more quiet and there is more room for cycling. Nice to cycle on to the Monnikensteeg/ Schelmseweg, and choose your route: turn right to Velp, a slight climb, but after that crossing to the Zijpenberg possible, or rather turn left on the Schelmse weg, a nice climb, then a nice drop, and another nice climb? Then right to Ede, round Veluwe via Hoenderlo and finally Arnhem again. Not only climbing, also very nice cycling!
