The mountain of my father. He often told about it, how he, in the early sixties, took this hill with his friends on their cycling holiday, cycling from youth hostel to youth hostel. He found it quite a climb, with only two gears. And especially that name: Himmelsleiter! A more beautiful name is hardly imaginable.
I rode it myself in 1991, on my cycling holiday. It was not too bad. Three blades in front helps a lot... I had to watch out for the railroad, because my father told me it is just before the summit. What I remember most is the bike path and the busy, long straight road next to it. Doesn't do the beautiful name justice. But the story of my father remains beautiful: I will ask him about it again!
Dé berg van mijn vader. Hij vertelde er vaak over, hoe hij, begin jaren '60, deze heuvel nam met zijn vrienden op hun fietsvakantie, fietsend van jeugdherberg naar jeugdherberg. Hij vond het een hele beklimming, met maar twee versnellingen. En dan vooral die naam: Himmelsleiter! Een mooiere naam is nauwelijks te bedenken.
In 1991 reed ik hem zelf, op mijn fietsvakantie. Viel mee. Drie bladen voor helpt enorm... Het was vooral uitkijken naar de spoorlaan, want die ligt net voor de top had mijn vader verteld. Wat ik vooral herinner is het fietspad en de drukke, lange recht weg ernaast. Doet de mooie naam toch eigenlijk tekort. Maar het verhaal van mijn vader blijft mooi: zal hem er nog eens naar vragen!
Straight road to the roof of the Eifel but the free cycling path next to it swings a little more and is sometimes nicely separated from the busy road by some greenery. After the first bit of climbing you see the right of the climb in front of you in full glory. Looks very imposing but the climb is easy to do without really tough parts. The bike path has good asphalt but is two-way traffic so watch out for very fast descending oncoming traffic. At the top beautiful view to the rear.
Kaarsrechte weg naar het dak van de Eifel maar het vrij liggende fietspad er naast slingert net iets meer en is soms mooi van de drukke weg afgescheiden door wat groen. Na het eerste stukje klimmen zie je de recht van de klim in vol ornaat voor je uit. Ziet er heel imposant uit maar de klim is goed te doen zonder echt pittige gedeeltes. Het fietspad heeft prima asfalt maar is wel tweerichtingsverkeer dus opletten voor zeer snel dalende tegenliggers. Bovenin prachtig uitzicht naar achteren.
