Coming from the Furka on 30/08/2019 at the roundabout in Hospental I cycled up the Gotthardpass. Despite the car tunnel, quite busy wide road that winds up slightly twisting without extreme gradients into a wide valley with 2 hairpin bends to continue on a higher level on the mountainside. The exit of the main road (as shown on the climbfinder map) to the old Tremola cobblestone route is, contrary to the other side, NOT mandatory for cyclists. Go early in the morning as it faces south. If you go in the afternoon on a sunny day you will cook. Some starter cobbles sections on the tarmac road from Airolo and the last 6km is all cobbles. Its popular with motorbikes

Beautiful iconic climb over small square cobblestones. The climb runs nicely although I got tired of the rattling at one point. The views are fantastic and cycling up is truly an experience. At the top you will find several restaurants.
If you go back to Andermatt, you can take the wide road to descend. Goes nice and fast and saves a lot of braking on the cobblestones.
On 17 June, this climb was closed to motorised traffic. Apart from sheet of snow on the road fine to do.

Prachtige iconische klim over kleine vierkante kinderkopjes.

This end is almost boring compared to the old Tremola from Airolo. You can/should take the cobbled road finish - the last 3 to 4 kms - although the easier road is to stay on the "highway". BTW: you should start in Göschenen, to get a view on the Teufelsbrücke - that part is amazing. Therefor 4* if you include that, otherwise max 3*...

Apparently it has to be approached from the other side, via Tremole. However, even from Andermatt it has its charm. 3 km before the summit, the road becomes completely empty and you ride on paving stones. The Tremol descent is also exciting. I recommend

Podobno trzeba podjezdzac ja z drugiej strony, przez Tremole. Jednak i z Andermatt ma swoj urok. 3km przed szczytem droga robi sie zupelnie pusta, jedzie sie wtedy po kostce. Zjazd Tremola tez dostarcza emocji. Polecam

Remarkable because you cycle the last 3 km. almost traffic free, in "light Paris-Roubaix" style, on fairly straight ascending road with occasional faint bends along several lakes to end up at the large Lago della Piazza at the touristically busy pass height (catering industry).
On the Tremola I encountered the old stagecoach from Andermatt that in a distant past provided a connection over the pass.
It absolutely cannot compete with the unique climb from Airolo but on the Furka/Gotthard/Nufenen (clockwise) it is unavoidable.
