Magnificent from Saint Gervais to Reomeyere, the climb to Mont Noir is less pleasant although the views through the trees are magnificent.
It's steep towards the tunnel but it's manageable, and it's in alternating sun and shade. Few cars. The road is sometimes good and sometimes damaged. Very nice route.

C est pentu vers le tunnel mais ça passe , et c est à l ombre et au soleil en alternance . Peu de voiture . Route parfois bonne parfois abîmée . Très beau parcours
The stretch through the Ecouges is really beautiful with an impressive waterfall that you ride right past. You can easily combine this climb with a descent through the Gorges du Nan (or do it the other way round). I should mention that the tunnel Frank_Pastor is talking about is now well lit (500 metres long), it is quite narrow though so watch out for any cars's.
Het stuk door de Ecouges is echt heel mooi met een indrukwekkende waterval waar je pal langsrijdt. Deze klim kun je prima combineren met een afdaling door de Gorges du Nan (of je doet het precies andersom). Ik wil even melden dat de tunnel waar Frank_Pastor het over heeft inmiddels goed verlicht is (500 meter lang), hij is wel vrij smal dus let op eventuele auto's.
A nice pass, not easy! On March 9, 2022, I did it for the first time. There is now lighting in the ecouges tunnel which lasts 500m. It is of course necessary to have its lighting. At the exit, signpost " attention chute de glaçons! indeed, there are stalactites of ice on the right side. At the top there is still snow on the sides. I recommend this ascent because there are often viewpoints. you don't get bored.

Un joli col pas facile!. Le9 mars 2022, je l'ai fait pour la 1ere fois. il y a maintenant l'éclairage dans le tunnel des ecouges qui dure 500m. Il faut bien sur avoir quand même son éclairage. A la sortie, panneau " attention chute de glaçons! en effet, il y a des stalactiques de glaces sur le côté droit. Au sommet encore de la neige sur les côtés. Je recommande cette ascension car il y a souvent des points de vues. on ne s'ennuie pas.

Be sure to have a light on the bike, essential! Verlichting absoluut noodzakelijk ! Since the unfortunate closure of the Ecouges canyon, all vehicles, including cyclists, have to take the Ecouges tunnel, which is long (several hundred metres), narrow, sloping... and not at all lit. Apart from that, the road is worthwhile: picturesque, narrow, and steep. The final part, between the Romeyère pass (a small ski resort in winter) and the Mont Noir pass, is a forest road that can be in very bad shape, especially after the winter. If this is the case, there is nothing to stop you from going down from the col de Romeyère to the beautiful villages of Rencurel and La Balme.
Attention à prévoir un éclairage sur le vélo, indispensable !! Verlichting absoluut noodzakelijk ! Depuis la fermeture malheureuse il y a une dizaine d'années du passage en corniche du canyon des Ecouges, tous les véhicules, cyclistes compris, doivent prendre le tunnel des Ecouges, long (plusieurs centaines de mètres), étroit, oblique… et pas du tout éclairé. Mis à part cela, la route est digne d'intérêt : pittoresque, étroite, et pentue. La partie finale, entre le col de Romeyère (petite station de ski l'hiver) et le col du Mont Noir, est une route forestière qui peut être en très mauvais état, notamment au sortir de l'hiver. Si c'est le cas, rien n'empêche de redescendre à partir du col de Romeyère sur les très beaux villages de Rencurel et La Balme.
