Note that the road was blocked off before the tunnel. No need to worry about climbing the mountain by bike around the markers. The 2025 Women's Tour has come this way.
The climb begins around an ugly roundabout in Chambéry. We climb towards Bellecombette and its buildings.
Then, suddenly, nature takes back control.
It's a fairly easy pass. Never difficult. Occasionally, there are short, flat or even downhill sections. A little traffic, but nothing stressful. Trees everywhere, masking the scenery. But the finish at the foot of Mont Granier is splendid.
Climbed with Éric and Dominique on 17 July.
Despite its length and uneven gradient, this is the easiest slope to climb to the Col du Granier.
The ascent starts at the Rond-Point in the heart of Chambéry, where the traffic is fairly heavy as the D 912 crosses the Chartreuse massif as far as St Pierre d'Entremont, a village that has the distinction of straddling Savoie and Isère.
The tarmac is fine, and there are plenty of shady areas. To admire the scenery, you have to turn around as the road faces the mountains, and you need to stop just before the tunnel as you can see Lac du Bourget in the distance.
The Auberge at the top of the Granier doesn't open until 10.30am, which isn't ideal for early morning cyclists.
Ps : Numerous roads provide access to the Col du Granier, Chambéry ( Several possible departure points ) Chapareillan , St Baldoph, Barberaz... among others.
On the practical side, the Bois Plan car park on the outskirts of Challes les Eaux is the ideal place to start, and a cycle path takes you all the way to Chambéry.
Nice climb on an August morning. The road isn't too bad and the passage through the tunnel is quite nice. It's a fairly easy pass.
Beautiful climb. Nice and steady. I did this as a warm up for the all but forgotten 1984 tour de france hors catégorie climb 'la Ruchère-en-chartreuse'.
After getting out of Chambéry I encountered maybe a dozen cars on the way up. With about 6 km to go there began the first of several sections of new smooth pavement, so that was nice. Unfortunately the restaurant at the top wasn't open so no coffee for me :)
A nice climb without much difficulty, a good warm up for an outing in the Bauges. Continue to the Col de la Cluse, which is much wilder!
