Col des Roches was the first col with a real nameplate on top that I ever climbed....we are now talking about July 1990 (yes, I am that old). I was on my first cycling holiday alone and dropped by the bike bus in Dôle from where I headed into the Jura.... Still too young and poor for lightweight camping equipment, I arrived at the top on an old Batavus weighing about 20 kilos where Swiss customs stopped me with the legendary question "Do you smoke? " to which I replied, still young and not very bright "as if I could then cycle all the way up here with all that luggage". As a result, I stood there for another hour as they began to examine all my camping gear in minute detail.

Incidentally, it was a busy road up even then. A few years ago I passed it by car....and it is still a busy road uphill.

Col des Roches was de eerste col met echt een naambordje bovenop die ik ooit beklommen heb....we spreken nu over juli 1990 (ja, zo oud ben ik). Ik was voor het eerst alleen op fietsvakantie en door de fietsbus in Dôle gedropt vanwaar ik de Jura in trok.... Nog te jong en arm voor lichtgewicht kampeeruitrusting kwam ik op een oude Batavus met een kilo of 20 boven alwaar de Zwitserse douane me stopte met de legendarische vraag "Rook je?", waarop ik nog jong en niet zo snugger antwoordde "alsof ik dan dat hele eind hier naar boven zou kunnen fietsen met al die bagage". Gevolg was dat ik er nog een uur stond omdat ze al mijn campingspullen minitieus gingen onderzoeken.

Overigens was het toen al een drukke weg omhoog. Een paar jaar geleden ben ik er met de auto langsgekomen....en het is nog steeds een drukke weg omhoog.
